Mr. Carmet, Pa., May 6.

A freight train on the Philadelphia and Reading Railway got disconnected on a long grade near here last night. The rear section collided with the first section at the foot of the grade, exploding a car of Dupont powder. Near the track stood two rows of seventeen houses, occupied by the Philadel- phia Coal and Iron Company’s employes. The explosion wrecked all the houses and twelve cars. Stoves ignited the ruins, which burned John Quinn and _ two girls, occupants of one house, who were all burned up. Quinn’s two boys escaped with bad burns. While Simon Kerwick carried his wife trom his burning dwelling his five children were burned or injured, some very seriously. The money loss is $75,000.

Dusty, May 6, The Evening Telegram publishes a des- patch from Sydney, N. 8. W., saying that, in an interview, Cardinal Moran advised that if the National cause was condemned, Irishmen should disregard even the com- mand of the Holy See, and that the agita tion for Home Rule must continue until victory 1s attained despite all opposition. The Belfast Whig states that Gladstone gave an audience to three Parnellite njem bers of Parliament on Thursday. Lord Rosebery was present... The subject dis- cussed was an Irish Local Goverament scheme as a stepping stone to Home Rule.

A Sydney, N.S. W., press despatch of Saturday says a sculling match took “place to-day between Peter Kemp, of Australia, and Edward Hanlan. Kemp won by five lengths. The race was over the Parametta course. The race between Hanlday ‘and Kemp was for £400 a side and the cham- pionship of the world. The latest advices concerning the men were that betting was even, and the Australian was in splendid rowing form. The defeat of Hanlan by tive lengths must undoubtedly end his career as an oarsman of note. His day in the acquatic arena has passed,

Judge Henry's Funeral. Hauirrax, May 6. The funeral of the late Judge Henry took place from St. Matthew’s Presbyterian Church to-day. The Bench and Bar at- tended in a body, and nearly all the busi- ness "men of Halifax were present. The number of old men in attendance was com- mented on. The late Judge was popular with the generation passing away, The coftin was magnificently decorated with flowers.

Church Missions. Orrawa, May 6.

The Reformed Church of England, pre- sided over by the Reformed Episcopal Church of Canada, of the American Branch, agreed upon a basis of amalgamation at the Synod here to-day. Doctrinal differences caused a separation years ago, but there have been mutual concessions. A new Bishop will be elected in September.

John Ritchie, Superintendent of the Sailors’ Home, better known as the **Sail- or’s Friend,” died this morning in his 72nd year.

Col. Van Straubenzie will be banquetted by his Montreal friends next Friday even- ing, when Mrs. Van Straubenzie will be presented with a silver tea service.

The Emperor's Case—Worse. Beri, May 6.

The Emperor was feverish last night and was frequently disturbed by an increased discharge of pus. His temperature rose to nearly 90. By morning it had fallen to 37.9, but the Emperor was exhausted. The doctor advised him not to leave his bed. His breathing is difficult and rapid, Another abscess has broken out in the Emperor's throat.

Decorations Returned. Sr. Pererspurc, May 6.

The German Ambassador here has return- edtothe Czar the Russian decorations worn by the late Emperor. The Ambassa- dor acknowledged the high distinction conferred upon the wearer. The Czar was greatly moved by this mark ofj cordiality and attachment of the dead Emperor.

Disastrous Storms. Lonpon, May 6.

Despatches from India announce that Dehi and Maradaboo were visited by disas- trous hail storms. About 150 persons were killed. Some hail stories weighed two pounds. At Paceloti, Bengal, 20 persons were killed and 200 seriously injured ; 2000 huts were destroyed by hail stoues.

Epidemic in Madrid.

Lonpon, May 6.

A Madrid despatch says an epidemic pre- vailg in that city. It is feared the disease is of the cholera nature, and its spread is attributed to the extreme heat and the drinking of impure milk.
