De Beers Consolidated Mines is more than just a corpany— it is the most successful

By the middle of the nine— teenth century, small quan— tities of diamonds had been discovered along Indian river- beds and in Brazilian jungles.

W Premier Lee announced ' » ‘ on November 12, 1982

that, when the new see-,-

sicn of» the legislative Assembly convenes in

1983, he will move the nomination of Mrs. Marion Reid as Speaker of the

House and of Rev. Dr. William MacDougal as

Deputy Speaker.

Mrs. Reid, first elected to the assembly in the General Assembly of 1979, served as Deputy Speaker of the House during the 55th General Assembly,

' from 1979 until 1982. Rev. MacDougal, first elected. in 1978, has had extensive experience on House Committees and, in his new role, will serve as Chairman of the whole House in Committee during consideration of the spending estimates. Mrs. Reid represents lst Queens and Mr. MacDougals 4th Prince.

In making the announce- ment, the Premier paid tribute to former House Wer Dan Compton who served in the chair for four sessions from 1979 to 1982. During his tenure as Speaker plans were put in place and largely completed for the Legislative Annex mat to Province House

which is non nearing completion. "Mr. Speaker Compton did “a great deal to enhance the inde- v pendence of the chair during his term". .

In a further announcenent concerning the Assembly, Premier Lee indicated

that Hon. Fred Driscoll, Minister of Energy and Forestry, has been married to act as G0verrment 7 House Leader. He replaces Horace B. Carver, " m, who resigned from the ministry following his re— election at thelast ‘ general election.

The Premier said that he was making his in- tentions concerning the House known some- what earlier than is usual. "Though the
