THE PROBLEMS

ls abortion the real answer to the problems of the unwanted, socially undesirable or de- fective child? Is it the honest answer to the overburdened mother or the economically deprived family? NO! Abortion is a convenient and expedient solution, the price of which is an innocent human life!

‘In an age of affluence and rapid technical advances, Canadians are capable of solving their, problems in a manner which acknow- ledges and respects the rights of BOTH the mother and the unbornrchild. It is obvious that our effort must be directed toward this aim if we are to achieve the goal set by Canadians for a “Just Society”. Justice can be accom- plished only by taking POSlTlVE STEPS to correct the social conditions which seem to favor the acceptance of abortion.

I increased assistance and counselling for the unwed mother.

'I expanded education and information services in family planning.

I education in humanreproduction and sexuality, in the ways best suited to meet this growing need.

OPEN LETTER

Mr Pierre-E. Trudeau Prime Minister Parliament, Ottawa

Mr. Prime Minister ,

Almost two years ago, the Canadian Parliae ment passed a law authorizing medical or surgical interrup- tion of pregnancy, or in other words, so-called therapeutic abortion. '

Since then, a movement has been set up urging that this law be broadened to permit abortion at the mother's request.

We are opposed to this motion for the following reasons:

1. Broadening the present law will give place to numerous abuses;

2. it will not decrease to any great entent, the number of clandestine abortions;

3. it will not lessen the danger that is inherent in this procedure, nor the resultant death rate;

’9. it will certainly deprive the country of a T“:- ge number of citizens who will be needed for prosperity in the future;

5. finally, we believe that the embryo or human foetus is a human being, different frorr his mother, having the same right to live as do. all other human beings.

We would be grateful if you woul: or good enough to convey to your colleagues in the Canadian 'irlia- ment our firm opposition to the broadening of the law on therapeutic abortion.
