San Faancisco, Aug. 13.— Senator Le- land Stanford is giving aid and encourage- ment to thousands of southern negroes who are establishing colonies in California. It is expected 50,000 negroes will become re- dents of this state within the next three

months. The colonists come principally from Alabama, Texas, South and North Carolina. Democratic papers are making

vigorous protests against this influx of colored peuple.

Orrawa, Aug. 13.—The evidence cf Senator Robitaille, taken in his private room, was read tothe committee of privili- ges and elections at the spening of the meeting this morning. Senator Robitaille said that early in last session Robert Me- Greevy came to him and after asking him if he were on good terms with the govern- ment and with Sir Hector, showed him certain documents damaging to them as to McGreevy, which he desired witness to lay before the government. R bert said that he and Murphy had fully considered that matter and were determined t go on. Witness asked him then: ‘What do you want ?. Do you wint the law suit abandon- ed? Do you want money!” Robert Me- Geeevy answered that he did not care about the law suit and did not want money,

but that Thomas should resign his seat in parliament and on the har- bor _ comnuiiesion. ** Because,” he said, ‘‘so long as he is there we cannot get a contract!” I said even if you make him resign he will be returned again.
