It was a Sunday, around midnight, when I went fora walk. It was raining lightly and there was a heavy fog on the ground. There wasa yellow glow in the air from the dampened light that shown the dark walk- ways. There could not have been a spookier night.

This is a good situation fora horror film but it is a bad situation fora university campus. In all to many campuses around the country, the horror-film descrip- tion is an accurate description of the failure of the universities to provide adequate lighting to the stu- dents who must walk the campus late at night.

We are lucky at UPEI to be at a university where there is a real effort to make the campus as well lit as possible for night travellers. The improvements in the past number of years to the lighting on campus have been dramatic. The installation of new lights around campus a few years ago has taken the campus from near utter darkness to reasonable well lit.

This is not to say that there is not more to be done. There is still a few areas on campus that need im- provements. Whén I went for my walk on Sunday I really looked around at the areas of campus that are still lacking adequate lighting.

in the main area of campus there seems only to be 3 or 4 spots that need more lighting. In particular, the area between the library and the chaplaincy centre, the irea behind the Cass building, and the area on the Main side of the rink. The parking lots are another tory. It is this area that gets the shot end of the ighting stick. It is not the parking lot beside the

nnis courts that has the problem but rather the arking area by Belvedere Avenue and especially the arking lot behind the barn. In these two areas there

sa totally unacceptably level of lighting. The parking stalong Belvedere Avenue is very poorly lit. There leeds to be quite a few more lights installed there.

the barn parking lot is the poorest lit area on campus. \tthe bottom of the lot there is areas that are in total Jackness. This isa potentially dangerous area and mething should be done to improve it.

Lack of lighting is not only a nuisance but it is also a dangerous situation. If people are forced to park ina poorly lit area early in the day, they should move their car closer as soon as the opportunity arises.

Students should avoid the darker corners of campus at night and should limit travelling late at night as much as possible. Take advantage of some of the new parking spots late at night, in order to reduce the distance you have to walk after dark. I hope the university will take a look at the lighting needs of the campus and act on them to improve the lighting. We have it quite good here but it could be better.

One last note. If the university ever considers anew lighting system for campus, I hope they will look at lights that are a little more in sync with the historical look of the university. Lights similar to those at the front door of the Main building are both more visu- ally pleasing and give off a more appealing light in all directions and does not give the dark spot behind the lamp post as the current ones do.
