Not Slated For Viet Nam

_ LONDON (AP)—Britain does not intend to send troops t join American forces in Viet Nam, Foreign Secretary Michael Stew- art told the House of Commons.

Stewart had been asked by | Lady Tweedsmuir, a Conserva- | tive member of Parliament, | whether the U.S. government had asked Britain to send troops to Viet Nam. He did not an- swer directly but said:

‘It is not our intention to do

go; in view of our position as eo - chairman (of the Geneva conference; .”’ « Britain and the Soviet Union ere co-chairmen of the Geneva conference which divided North and South Viet Nam. From this position the British have tried without suecess to get peace | talks started.

Reports have been published here that the U.S. would like Britain to transfer some of its troops from Malaysia to Viet Nam when and if the Malay- sians no longer need them for protectifn against Indone- sia. These renorts have not been confirmed officlally,

‘Retired CNR Official Dies

WATERLOO, Que. (CP)—Ben- jamin R. Deacon, who retired in 1947 as manger of the press bu- reau in the CNR’s public rela- tions department, died here Monday. He was 88.

Born in Montreal}, ‘Mr. Deacon’s newspaper career be- gan in 1906, and in the following 20 years he worked on newspa- pers and magazines in Montreal, Ottawa, Winnipeg and New York: He was a feature colum- nist for the old Montreal Herald, the Winnipeg Telegram and the New —York— Morning Telegraph.

From — 1920 -to. 1925.-he was superintendent of the new York bureau of The Canadian Press and during that time he wrote a weekly theatrical review for the mews agency.
