New Commander-in-Chief of British Forces in South Africa
Loxpon. Aug. 16.—Gen. Walker, who replaces Gen. Butler as commander-in- chief of the British troops in South Africa is regarded as one of the ablest generals in the army. His appointment, therefore, taken to indicate tha: the situation is graver, Lieutenant- General Sir Francis William Edward For- ester Walker, K.C. B. G., has been in command of the western military district of Great Britain since 1895. He is the eldest son of the late Sir Eiward W. For- estier- Walker K. C. B., was born in 1844 and entered the service in 1862, joining the Scots Guards. He served in the Kaffir war of 1876-78, was military secretary of Sir Bartle Frere from 1878 to 1879; served during the Zalu war; was quartermaster general in Bechuanaland 1884 ; command- ed the “»fantry brigade of Aldershot from 1£89 to 1890, and commanded the troops in Kgypt from 1890 io 1895.
