Now the way that house was being built it was really two houses in one. The two living rooms were wholly separate. There was a thick wall of rushes between the two rooms. Each room had its own entrance from under water. When they were at home t'he two families were as much separated as if they were living in houses on opposite sides of the pond.

The choicest pieces were pick- led in brine, then hung up in the smoke-house to receive their bath V of sweet birch or maple smoke. Ah what bacon that must have been!

And every farm had its own little workshop with a few carpen- ter's tools. Here on wet days the farmer and his sons busted them- selves with making axe-handles, whlffletrees. etc. In those work- shops the womenfolk used to store their spinning wheels and looms when not in use.

Other buildings housed sheep, pigs, calves and what-have-you. The pioneer homestead was a tidy little village in itself.
