“*Mr. Paul,” said the reporter, ‘‘I bear in my hand the gift of life. Will you ac- cept it?” He held up a small bottle.

‘‘What you got in that?” inquired the sagamore.

‘* The elixir of life. Something that Dr. Brown-Sequard assures me will make an old man young again and give unto him

‘length of days. A few drops will make you feel as you felt in youh’s heyday when the world was fair and the future full of promise.”

“Gin?” said Paul, contemptuously.

** Not gin, my brother. Gin will not produce life. The elixir will make you live a hundred—yea—a thousand years. Have some?”

“Tf I want to live a thousand years,” said the sagamore proudly. ‘* I don’t have to ask paleface how I can do that. Injuns know all’bout it heap long time ago.”

“About the elixir?”

‘“You can call him that if you like that,” said Mr, Paul.

‘*But do you mean to tell me that the redskins know how to prolong life?”

‘*'That’s what I said.”

‘And could you rejuvenate that old car- cass of yours if you wanted to?”

‘I kin make myself live long time if I want to,”

** How would you do it? ”

“Tf I tell you that then you try it your’ self. It ain’t good for this country if men like you live long time. I won’t tell.”

“Well, [suppose you will tell me why you don’t use it yourself ?”

“When man lives in the world long’s I have—found out much about this world and people lives in it like I have—he don’t want to stay here heap much longer, He’s got pooty much all he kinstand.”

*‘But I know some old men who are ex- tremely anxious to live longer,” objected the reporter.

““Them’s very men you don’t want to give that to,” said Mr. Paul. ‘They want to live longer so they do some more deviltry. Any man done best he kin till he gets old man like me, he’s ready to go any time after that see if he can’t find some better place.”

“And you won’t take a little elixir? i wanted to try a little experiment. Better have some,” urged the reporter.

But Mr. Paul declined. He would take some tabac, he said, but he had seen enough of this world to satisfy him, and was quite willing to pass at any time to the hunting grounds of his people.

“Mebbe I can do some things for you,” he suggested, as the reporter turned to go. “TI got little needle here. If you let me stick itin your head few times it makes you remember all things you ever knowed.”

“And all I ever did?” queried the report- er.

“All that, too,” said Mr. Paul. ““Good-day,” said the reporter, abrubtly. “I don’t want any jabs from that thing. “Tm going home. Good-day.”

““Good-day,” said Mr. Paul, and smiled grimly to himself as the reporter hurried away.—St. John Sun.

A Russian official paper says the true

object of the triple alliance is war.

Some people don’t hesitate to ‘call a spade a spade.” Others are not afraid to call a rake a gentleman.

In China the inhabitants are counted every year in a curious manner. The oldest master of every ten houses has to count the families, and has to make a list, which is sent to the Imperial tax houée. Last year the whole number amounted to 879,383,500 inhabitants.

A young man in Liverpool stole £100, part of which he spent in buying a watch and chain and a diamond ring. On account of his ‘respectable appearance” he was released on bail. As the respectable ap- pearance was largely due to a judicious in- vestment of the £100, the case is not wholly unlike that of a man who killed both his parents. and then asked to be treated leniently because he was ‘a poor orphan.”

The well-known detection of crime, in ** Diplomacy,” through the perfume of a woman’s glove, was reproduced, says a foreign paper, by a recent occurrence in Paris. A man who found his room robbed of allhis jewelry perceived a peculiar per- fume, and a few days later noticed it again when passing two well-dressed women in

the street. They were arrested and found to be the thieves.

Experiments have recently been made at Kiel by the German naval ‘authorities on torpedoes made of paper and worked by electricity. The results are said to have been very satisfactory. The torpedo is about 11 feet long by 16 inches in diameter, andis made of 12 layers of paper 14 inches thick, _compressed and varnished. The motor is mounted on three paper ribs and driven from the ship or shore by a cab'e, the steering and ignition of the charge be- ang controlled through the same cable.

Do You Drink Ice Water?

That cool refreshing drinks in warm weather are delicious is undeniable. That drinking ice water in copious draughts when j a person is overheated is injurious, not to say | dangerous, is also undeniabie. But that the free drinking of water in some form in hot! weather must be avoided, is deniable, and is one of the greatest popular errors extant. When a person is perspiring freely from every pore, a vast amount of water is drawn from the body, which must be re-supplied, or great injury is being done the physical health, and the foundation of some of the worst forms of kidney disease is being siowly, but surely laid. Why ! someone will exclaim, that is just what causes kidney troubles, drinking water freely which contains so much lime. Wrong again ! So long as the water drank is freely carried through the system, and converted in its passage to the naturally acid reaction of the urine and perspiration, no danger can occur by deposits of urea or lime in the kidneys and

bladder, because they remain _ perfectly in solution, and are _ carried _ out of the body instead of remaining it,

Literally, they are washed out of the body by the copious draughts of water (that most per- tect of all known solulents), same as a series of pipes are ‘‘flushed” with water to clean them. A clean body is never diseased.

We are agreeably surprised to see such fine celery, cabbage, cauliflower, green and butter beans, beets, carrots, onfons, lettuce, etc, at Gay’s stalls, Market House.
