Advices from Hayti are extremely con- flicting. Some report that the cause of the | rebels is progressing favorable, others state | that the rebel force in Miragoaue is on the point of stirrendering, the water supply of the town being cut off. The true situation appears to be that Miragoane, which is de- fended by about 700 rebels, holds out against 6,000 Government troops, while the rest of the Republic is comparatively quiet, although there is a rumor that the town of St. Mare is in arms, not for Gen. Caselais, but in favor of Gen. Piquant. Several noted persons at Cape Haytien have been arrested. Six hundred fugitive inhabitants of Miragoane have reached Port-au-Prince on board a Norwegian bark. They state the rebels blew up the bridge at Miragoane with dynamite, killing 200 per- sms and wounding 200 more. The boat with four men, which ran the blockade at Miragoane, has arrived at Kingston, carry- ing letters to General Baselais, assuring him the force in Miragoane can resist the siege for four months. President Solomon has issued a degree that properties of politi- cal offenders shall be held as security for alli war expenses and the Government is now mortgaging such properties. Business is stagnant.

Lightning struck a tank of oil in the yard of the Standard Oil Works at Cavan Point, Jersey City, at 3,30 o'clock on the 10th. The tank exploded, and was followed by the explosion and burning of seven more large storehouses. ‘The dock, several tank boats and 100 feet of trestle work leading to Black Tom's Island were also destroyed. Tank No. 7, filled with naptha—probably 20,000 or 30,000 barrels—exploded with terrific force. The fire is now eating its

mile inland. The buildings that have been destroyed were situated in the midst of tanks. The buildings burned comprise an engine house, carpenter shop, boiler and pump room, two warehonses, cooper shop and blicksmith shops. Six men lost their lives; the bodies have not been recovered.

At the Bow street examination of the Dynamite Conspirators in London, a clerk at the Euston Railway station testified that Wilson and Gallagher deposited a valise there. and told him to keep it cool. The American schooner ‘ Commodore § “oot” arrived at North Sydney on May 7th, with Captain Thompson and crew of the British barque ‘'Zambesi,” which foundered at sea on the 5th inst The captain reports that he sailed from Sunderland, April 11th, with 600 tons of coal and 150 tons of coke fer Quebec. Experienced rough weather coming westward. On the 5th, at 9p. m., about sixteen miles east of Scatarie struck heavy ice which stove in the bow. The ship foundered in about twenty minutes The captain and crew took to the boats and were out about twelve hours when they were picked up by the schooner that brought them into port. [The ‘‘Zam- besi” was a vessel of 1057 tons register, built at Sand Point, N. B.. in 1857 and owned by George Cairrs. of Newcastle, G. B., from whence she hailed. }
