Tae Haliiax Chronicle says ‘Our lively young friend, Judge Marshall, aged ninety- three, leaves this morning by rail for Boston, with several relatives. It is to be hoped there will be no horse races in Boston while he is there.”

Tue London Times has had 21 actions for libel brought against it since 1872. In 14 cases the plaintiffs abandoned the action before trial, and in four recovered no damages. Small verdicts were obtained in three cases.

Lavycaep —On the 9th, from the shipyard of Messrs. Coffin & Glover, Mount Stewart, a very handsome and well finished brigantine of 247 tons register, to class nine years A at Eng- lish Uloyds, named the ‘‘Lionel.” This vessel was built for Peake Bros. & Co., and towed to their No. 2 wharf, Charlottetown, by the steamer ‘‘Heather Belle.”

Tue pic-nic of the railway employes, held at Birch Grove, Freetown, to-day, was attend- ed by an immense concourse of people. At 9 o'clock this morning a'train of fourteen cars, loaded with excursionists, left. the station in this city for the grounds. It was. joined by another large train from the East at Royalty Junction. The weather to-day was unfavor- able for pie-nies ; but no doubt the pic-nicers made the best of it.

Buu's Ruy.—A running race for a hat came off yesterday on Prince street, on which occasion our friend Tom Pepper made the best time on record, and distanced the field, although closely pursued by a stalwart and ex- asperated son of Vulcan. Owing to a foul the hat fell to Vulcan, who generously threw it after his fast «\isappearing rival, thus earning the warm approbation of ‘‘the Judge,” who states that he never saw a swifter race. We congratulate Mr. Pepper on his success.

Four sisters of the Order of Charity, andtwo lay sisters, arrived here’ last night, and were met at the railway station by a large concourse of persons. ‘They were driven to their con- vent, the former residence ef our Bishop, on Dorchester street, which has been thoroughly repaired and fitted up. for their reception. They will devote themselves to the gare of the sick. A portion of the building they occupy has been fitted up as an hospital. This is the tirst atterapt made in Charlottetown towards the establishment of an institution of thiskind, and to Bishop McIntyre and his clergy is due the glory of leacling the way in so praiseworthy an undertaking —- Herald.

Picroyians.--The 106th anniversary of the settlement of the good old town of Pictou, N. S.4 is to be celebrated on Monday next, under the auspices of the Pictou Battery Garrison Artillery, by a grand rer Gathering and Scottish Tournament. The usual prizes will be competed for at the Scottish games, and competitors froin this Province will be admit- ted. After the games, a grand tug of war will come off, followed by a grand exnbition game of La Crosse, tv be participated in by the Pictou and New @ w La Crosse Clubs; and in the evening a grand military ball is to wind up the day’s proceedings. We learn that re- turn tickets, including admission to the grounds at Pictou, will be issued at $1.25 to parties from this city, who may feel disposed to take advantage of a cheap trip across the Straits.

Tue Dominion. Annual Prize Rifle meeting commences at Ottawa at 10 o'clock on Tuesday next. Twelve of the ‘‘ crack shots’’ of this city will take es. init. In Montreal about one o'clock on Satur day the occupants of the American house | were startled by the short, sharp report of | a pistol in the direction of the door leading | ito the yard. When the coat and shirt of the man was tora open, a small red spot from which the bleod was flowing freely, he discovered a little below the nipple. } Medical assistance was instantly sent for, jand Dr. Trenholme arrived. In the mean- time the poor fellew’s head was supported in the arms of a friend, where he lay pant- ing and groaning in a piteous manner, but spoke never a word. The doctor, before examining the wound, had the sufferer con- veyed up stairs, when after a short inspec- tion the wofhd was pronounced to be fatal and told the unfortunate man to make his peace with God, for earthly assistance would not be of the least avail. The medical man

man became unconscious. In his pocket was found the following note, which was much blotted and blurred, and which had the appearance of being written before the fatal deed was done :

‘‘Dear Edward—-’'ll meet you a corpse

A reporter ascertained from an old friend of Packard’s the cause of the rash act. ‘“‘l have known the young man Clarence M. Packard since he was a boy; he is twenty- three years of age, and is a native of Stock- holm, N. Y., but has lived the last eleven years in Milton Falls, Vt. He is a saddler by trade, and has always been of steady, sober habits. He commenced business on his own account about a month ago. He became engaged a year and a half since to a young lady in Milton Falls; the wedding day was fixed; but her parents objected to the marriage, and shortly after she broke off the engagement and refused to see him. He then paid attentions to another lady in Georgia, Vt., the result of which, it is said, was as unsuccessful as the first. From that time he exhibited signs of aberration of in- tellect, and there is no doubt that the sne- cessive disappointments in love had the effect of turning his brain and caused him to wander from heme and commit the ter- rible deed of yesterday.”

Barss, of Liverpool, visited the scene of the recently discovered gold lead, about fourteen miles from Milton, on the An- napolis road, and in one hour collected speci- mens of quartz estimated to contain $10 worth of gold. Operations will be commenced im- | mediately. | Ar Bradford, Penn., on the 2nd inst., Lewis Gray, aged twenty-seven years, and Charles Jones, aged 21, were conveying sixty pounds of nitro-glycerine to an oil well, when the stuff exploded, scattering the men, their team of horses and their buggy in fragments among the trees and over the hill sides. It is sup- posed the men were lifting one of the cans of glycerine from the buggy, when the handle gave way.

THe most sensational event for the discus- sion of society in London is the report of the arrangement of a marriage between the Duke of Argyll and the Hon. Mrs, Anson, widow of Col. Anson, Member of Parliament, daughter of Bishop Claughton, and niece of Lord Dud- ley, one of the richest peers in Great Britain. The marriage will give Lord Lorne a new mother-in-law, and, through the Princess Louise, distantly form new family connexions of the Queen herself. The news is talked of everywhere. Upon a modest gravestone in Vincennes cemetery appears the plaintive legend ‘ His neighbor played the cornet.”
