BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Canadian Nature Federation

a) express its pleasure to the Prime Minister for the federal cabinet‘s decision;

b) reminds both governments that the establishment of the Grasslands National Park will receive widespread public support; and

c) urges both governments to conclude negotiations with successful establish- ment of the Grasslands National Park by the end of 1980 (i.e. within Saskatchewan's 75th anniversary year).

VII Ecological Reserves Legislation

An ecological reserve is a legally protected natural area intended to preserve representative or unique ecosystems, habitats, species or natural phenomena by keeping human influence to a minimum. Some provinces have recently passed ecological reserves legislation but there are still many sites designated as potential reserves which receive no suitable protection.

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Canadian Nature Federation commends the governments of British Columbia, New Brunswick, Quebec, Nova Scotia, New- foundland and Saskatchewan; and urges the Governments of Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and Prince Edward Island, and the federal government with respect

to the Yukon and Northwest Territories to take immediate steps to legislate,Ecological Reserves Acts and to then

VIII World Conservation Strategy

In recognition of the long

term global need to develop policies aimed at sustaining development while preserving the biological organisms and processes essential to man— kind's survival, the Inter- national Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) announced the World Conservation Strategy in March 1980. The strategy

is intended to stimulate a more focussed approach to the management of living resources and to provide policy guidance on how

this can be carried out.

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED

that the Canadian Nature

Federation

a) urges the federal government and the various provincial and territorial governments to adopt the World Conservation Strategy and to implement the World Conservation Strategy in all areas of their respective jurisdictions to which it applies; and

b) urges the federal gOVernment in its foreign policy to encourage the adoption and implemen-

tation by other countries of the World Conservation Strategy.
