THE ISSUES BEHIND WAR.
The story is told of Napoleon at the battle of Leipsig, that when he saw the enemy's strategy de- veloping he made a. remark to the effect that they had learned some- thing from him. He had carried the sword into ma.nY countries and by so doing he had kindled a spirit which resulted in his own overthrow. The same thing has happened with would-be con- querors in our own time-they took the sword and perished DY U1! sword.
Our attention has been drawn to this subject by articles in a number of American religious papers on the threat to the liber- ties of American citizens from cer- tain Committees on Un-American activities.
Congress has appointed one such committee and certain voluntary organizations are moving in the same direction. The point is that in their attempts to protect Ameri- ca against the progress of the Com- munist tyranny they are robbing li'lt'll' own people of the freedom of thought, speech, and action that has been America's glory strength.

in the universities. Committees are being suggested to investigate the churches so that pro-Communists may be exposed. Prominent church- men, about whose loyalty to their own country and opposition to Communism there can be no doubt, have been accused of complicity in plots against their own institu- tions. The "smear" is a method used by these ultra-patriots; any public man who advocates social reform is labeled a. Communist, and, without any evidence that a court would consider, a cloud of suspicion is thrown over his re- cord.
The result is that public men fear to take a stand on issues that call for champions lest. such charges be laid against them.
Now we have no intention of discussing conditions in the Unit- ed States; our American cousins are well able to look after them- selves. But; we repeat certain things they have been saying about their own affairs to point to in peril that threatens individuals and communities everywhere-in fighting against acknowledged evils we tend to adapt their meth- ods and descend to their level. It is fully to attempt to fight the devil with fire; his fire consumes all who try to use it.
