NATURAL HESTORY UPDATE

A busy November meeting was held Nov. 6 with lots of interesting reports

from various members. Dan MacAskill's report on CNF activities included

the Federation's reaction to the recent caribou kill in the James Bay area.

(see the news release in this issue).

Evelyn Meader is still getting lots of reading material from the Canadian Coalition on Acid Rain including some ph levels for areas in Ontario—perhaps

we should ask the local weather office to publish ph levels for the Island

to keep us aware of our problems.

Diane Griffin discussed the upcoming agenda for the Island Nature Trust which includes a lottery to raise funds for land acquisition and management.

Rosemary Curley reported on ENGO's activities-they've changed their name to Canadian Environmental Network. There will be a meeting in Halifax Nov 30- Dec 2 with a meeting with federal Environment minister and Forestry minister as well

as sessions on effective lobbying.

The first half of the meeting finished with a few words from Daryl Peck of the Nature Conservancy of Canada—a Toronto based non-partisan group whose aims are

to preserve and acquire private land (mostly in Ontario).However, they are concentrating their efforts lately on Alberta and the Maritimes-in P.E.I. they

are helping the Island Nature Trust in the acquisition of lands in the St. Peter's Bay area as well as perhaps DesRoches Point. . ' ' ~ ' ' After the usual delicious lunch break, Geoff Hogan showed a short slide presentation about cormorants on P.E.I. '

COMING EVENTS TO WATCH FOR

DECEMBER MEETING; Jordan Hill of the P.E.I. Beekeeper's Association will give a presentation on an aspect of beekeeping.

BIRD COUNTS: reserve Dec. 22 and 27, as well as Jan 2 for the annual bird counts. (See article in this issue for further details).

FIELD TRIPS: Some tentative field trips planned include a visit to

the Planetarium in January; natural dyes at the Handcraft Centre in February and a trip to a winter woodlot in March. Watch for further details either in the newsletter or at meetings.

JANUARY MEETING: Please note that January's meeting will be held on the second Tuesday of January (Jan. 8) and will be the usual annual meeting with election of new officers and financial reports, etc. January's speaker will be Glen MacEachern, who will give a slide show.
