EDITORIAL

Against my better principles, I aniwriting my editorial telling the story of the yearbook Nexus 77. It is in response to the letters to the editEE——___. zgich I would advise you to read before reading

In the spring of '77, an editor was gired for Nexus '77.. After the fall semester of '77, how- _. ever, he was no longer at U.P.E.I. so a new editor had to be found.

It-was also realized around this time that photo— graphers were going to be needed since the U.P.E.I. Photo Club never Quite gotten underway. The chair- man of the Photo Club was approached in February to be one of the photographers for Nexus '77.\ He refused and suggested three other paiafigifiiiveme either already contacted or subsequently were con— tacted. They were Ken Adams, Gordon Pierce and Gordon coffin. ,

This left the job of editor still open. Marlene ‘ Wright plus two other girls, Kristin Eldridge and Viki Schmidt were hired "to edit, arrange layout and do whatever necessary to prepare for public— ation Nexus '77 for the total sum of $350" as stated by their contract. It also went on to say "the necessary pictures, layouts and all necessary Haterials are (to be) ready for mailing to the publisher by JUne 30/77 (or) this contract is null and void."

When JUne 20.arrived, Kenny Adane anleordie Pierce ( a native of Orrilia, Ont.) went to Ontario. Since they needed their noney for their trip and all their photography was completed, they were paid their fee of $200 each. Gordie Coffin was also paid at this tine although he did not request it. '

By June 30, Wright was the only one working on the yearbooanchmidtand.Eldridge had quit in April Schmidt had to return hone because her aunt was very sick and she was needed. Eldridge just went home to her boyfriend. Thus, the work was left up to “Eight . \

One of the photographers did not completely ful— fill his contract of supplying "the Student Union with photographs su—ficient and satisfactory to be published in the U.P.E.I. Student union's Year Book." He had only taken approximately one and a half rolls of film. Wright then tried to fill his place which includid learning how to process fihn. '

Because of all these problems, the yearbook was not sent as of October ll, 1977 and had just gone to the publisher October 18, 1977. National School Services were contracted to return the fin— ished yearbook ten weeks after receipt of all nec— essary materials required for its printing. TEn weeks later it was delivered and as is known is being distributed to the students. v

These are the facts as I knew them last we with only a little more detail added! The reason I did not go into the whole story last week was that I did not need to because a lot of it is not rele~ vant to the points I was trying to make. Those points are listed at the end of last week's edi- torial. No where in the editorial do I say that I thought the editor did a poor job.

last week's editorial was an attack on the sys— ' tem that was a majOr cause of the foul up of last year's Nexus. It was not a personal vendetta and I do not believe it could be taken that way. I wrote it in hopes of having the system changed, so as never to have the same thing happen again:

If it was a personal attack, as people have said it was, I would have recommended the Student Council to hire a better person for editor which I did

not do.

If anything is to improve, it needs criticism.

I criticized the yearbook because it needs ink provinq.‘ Unfortunately, criticizing things on

this campus causes bad feelings. What students need

to realize is that criticism of a job is not a crit- icism of the person.
