The situation can. also be improved by more careful handling of potatoes in harvesting and marketing. Observations by Mr. W. R. Shaw. Deputy Minister of Agriculture. gathered on his recent trip to mirope. were most interesting and instructive. 01 the conference of the International Federation of Agri- cultural Producers. he said so na- lions were represented by some 300 delegates and agricul- tural problms were discussed. just as they might be here. The special problem considered, was that of moving surplus food stuffs of the world to the places where people are starving. Peace can be preserved better by moving food and clothing to the people who need them, than by all the guns and bombs in'the world. In Den- mark. Mr. Shaw noted that the average farm is 3'1 acres. but that every inch is cultivated. Then co- operative systems are extensively developed both in Denmark and Sweden. and to an even greater ex- tent in Norway. Returning to Scot- land, he found everyone. including the young people. interested in every detail of farm worlr. Almost every farmer has a pit silo, 5 feet deep and 12 feet wide, filled with silage made of rye grass and orch- ard grass. pressed down with trac- tors and covered with a little clay. Entering Ireland by way of Belfast. he found the land to be very productive. Commenting on our own farming system. he said, "We perhaps are prone to follow out a system for years and years and years. while in the Scandina- vian countrics. and in Scotland and Ireland. they have broken away from the old ways and are experi- menting."
