EMPLOYMENT CENTER SET TO CLOSE by Nicole Bellefleur

In May 1992, students at UPEI will loose a valuable service. The Canada Employment Center for Students on campus will permanently close it’s doors due to Federal Government cutbacks. UPEI, however, isn’t the only campus to feel the pinch, the move is nation wide, affecting universities across Canada.

The center, located in the Robertson Library, has been serving students for over 20 years. But Ottawa feels that it no longer has the resources to fund the full range of services it had in the past. In deciding where to draw the line, it had to be determined who needed the service the most (ie. the long-term unemployed and the severely disadvantaged) Students are seen as being capable of doing their own job search.

The Center serves students in a variety of ways. Among other things, it operates a placement service, which links graduates to potential employers for permanent employment upon graduation. They also assist students with summer employment and part- time work during the year. Students who are unsure about their future can receive Career Councelling through the Choices Computer, which helps students determine their career paths. Last year, the staff received 5921 requests from students for assistance with resumes, job applications and information about job interviews. They also helped over 150 students through the career councelling program, and filled 485 jobs.

The closure will affect students in several ways. Employment assistance provided by the center will likely fall on student services. But it is doubtful that the university will be able to provide the appropriate funding necessary to carry on with the full range of services available now. Graduates will feel the big- gest impact, as firms have traditionally worked through the Canada Employment Center during re- cruitment. Next year, they will be on their own.

UPEI Theatre Society News

Plans for the UPEI Theatre Societ’s new season were discussed last Friday. This November, the students

will stage three one-act plays with Ron Irving and Dr, Malcolm serving as advisors. The plays are presenlty being chosen and auditions will take place very soon, ©

The spring production is scheduled for March and the society will bring in a director to present it. The | location of these productions is not definite yet, but X-PRESS will have more details on this and other events the society plans this year.
