MEMORANDA.

On the 10th inst., the Schooner Armada, of this Island, Charles M‘Quarrie, master and owner, laden with iron castings and coal for Mr. James W. Cairns, of this Town, shortly after getting under weigh, in the harbor of Pictou, for her return home, ran foul of the new Barque Lord Montgomery, and immediately filled and sank in the channel, the tops of her masts being just visible above the water. It is intended to make a trial to raise her.

The Brigantine Rose which sailed from Bay Fortune on the 11th inst., laden with timber and deals, went on ehore in a fog, at Green Island, C. B., on the 15th inst., and has since become a total wreck.

A Shaliop, which arrived at Halifax last week, with Gull Eggs from Labrador, reports that she fell in, a few days before, with a vessel near that coast, having every appearance of one belonging to Prince Edward, Teland, dismasted, with three men dead in the cabin. NHE ARTIFICIAL SLATE is the product of a mix- ture of mineral substances known to be the best non- conductors of heat as well as the mest indestructible - the Chemical affinity of which, converts the surfaces of matenals covered into a Coating of Aclual Slate—Proe} against Free and Water. ‘Yhus the laws of nature are made to accomplish results, as surprising as they are useful, by rendering wooden fabricks as durable as Brick or Stone, and less impervious to moisture, and consequently preventing decay and destruction from

corroding influences hitherto supposed unattainable, The principal ingredients are Alumina, Silica and the Oxides of Iron. The adhesive qualityjof the latter. not only binds but attracks the particles together, but the substance covered also. The longer exposed to the weather the more powerful the attraction, and conse- quently the harder the Slate. As various shades of co- lour are obtained, Brick Buildings may be made imper- vious to moisture and the fashionable colours of either Free Stone or Granite. The oil must be evaporated by the action of the weather before it is Fire proof, which ~ —_ from nine to twelve months,.

e Metatiic PAINTS, Purple and ar - ed as Weather and Water proof oa bets bone or Iron, secures them from Galvanje action, so fatal to lead and other Paints on Iron work—and their chemical coin- bination makes it impossible that any change should take place from atmospheric influence or the action of Salt Water and Sulphurated hydrogen, so prevaleut in Sea Ports and tidal Harbours. They surpass all Paints yet discovered in Cheapness and Durability, which render them preeminently adapted to the covering of al] kinds of Jronwork, such as Shipping, Mills, Bridges, Steam Machinery, Railway Cars, and Iron Railing. The Metallic Painis have been analysed by Professor Hays of Boston.

The following is an extract from his certificate: —

“As a permanent pigment, this mineral must rank with the most indestructable and unchangeable bases.

For covering Metallic Ware, its composition shews that it is eminently fitted.

Directions.—Artificial Slate: Mix the powder with pare Boiled Linsed Oil and a little Spirits of ‘Turpen- tine, to the consistency of very thick Paint, and apyly- ing with a common Brush, being careful to keep the mixture well stirred while putting it on. One pound will cover ten square feet with two coats,

The above new and really valuable Compounds will on trial, be found to sustain the characters given of them; large sales of each have been, and are veing made, in the United States of America, as also in New Brunswick where paints are extensively used for coat- ing Ships generaily; and are acknowledged as bein particularly well adapted to covering the bottoms of sex-going vessels:
