Mr. Davies, speaking on the question, wished it to be distinctly underetood that the members from the Maritime Provinces, of neither side of politics, had asked for the construction of this work, and they de- precated the idea that it was a concession to the Maritime Provinces. On motion of Malcolm McDonald, Esq., seconded by C. L. Barnes and D. A. Me- Kionon, Hon. D. Gordon was unanimously re-elected president of the association for the current year.

Hon. Mr. Gordon acknowledged the

The managing committee at the last annual meet- ing were re-elected, viz: A. J. Macdon«ld, G. A. Aitken, Wm. A. Poole, R. W. Sprague, C. L. Barnes, F.G Bovyer, Capt. McLaren, Jas. E. Macdonald and D. A. McKinnon, Jos. R. McDonald was reappointed auditor. A letter from the secretary of the Futurity Stakes of P. E. Islund for 1891 was read by the secretary asking what premiam would be given by the King’s County Exhibition Association if the Futurity Stakes were trotted for on the Georgetown Park. The secretary was instructed to make an offer. Other matters concerning the interests of the Association were then discussed, after which the meeting adjourned sine die.

Then, when Mr. Fuster moved that the House again render itself into Committee of Supply, Mr. Laurier moved in amend- ment that the conduct and language of Sir Charles Tupper. High Commissioner of Canada in England, in interfering in the recent elections and in imputing treason- able and disloyal motives to a large pro- portion of the people of this Dominion, and alao in assailing and vilifying the managers of the Grand Trunk Railway Company,and in reflecting upon the position of the said Company, is a breach of the duties of the office which he fills, and is calculated to destroy the efticiency of the said office, and to injure the credit of the Dominion, besides damaging a very important Cor- poration whose shareholders have invested large sums of money in the work of extend- ing and promoting the railway system of Canada. Zio apt Mr. Laurier supported his motion in a brief and moderate speech, to which Sir John Thompson made a vigorous and exhaustive reply. After recess, Sir Richard Cartwright delivered himself of much vituperation, and was being replied to by Mr. Mackintosh when the episode occurred which, I have no doubt, will become historic in theannalsof Canada. Sir Hector Langevin, with scarcely repressed emotion, intimated tothe House, the serious news which had just been received of the Premier's health and, seconded by Mr. Laurier, moved the adjournment. 3 Since that moment, I may say, but little work has been done in Ottawa, and a period of uprest has prevailed which has rendere? work almost impossible. A STARTLING TRAGEDY IN NEWFOUNDLAND.

Sr. Joun’s, Nfid., June 2.—Particulars of tartling tragedy have just been received from Grand Bank. James Follett, aged 35, shot and killed his brother Edward on the public street at midday. The cause of he shooting was Edward’s undue familiarity with his brother's wife. Before starting out to murder his brother, James locked his wife in a room, telling her he was going to settle the affair. He then left the house, taking with him a loaded gun Meeting his brother he took deliberate aim and fired. His victim dropped dead. James then returned to the house, and discovered that his wife bad escaped throngh a window. His evident intention was to murder her, for after shooting his brother he reloaded the gun, He made no attempt to conceal himself and was arrested and placed in jail. He expresses no regret at having committed the deed. Both men have families. Judge Prowse has gene to investi- gate the case.
