It means ai least 5,000 more consecrated dollars to spend in the work throughout the Dominion by lecal, county, provincial and Dominion Unions ; money touse in educating the people to realize more fully the danger that lurks in the un- chained monster, to the individual and to the state ; added to this, it means that should the membership be increased to double what it was reported at the last convention, that one generous hearted gentleman in Montreal will donate for the benefit of the Dominion treasury the snug little prize of $5000 cash.

The editor of the Hypnotic Magazine gives the following explanation or the ‘ manner in which the alleged Spiritualiatic medium, Miss Anna Eva Fay, who appear-

" The audience write burning questions upon slips of paper, and fold them carefully. These are collecied on trays, and emptied into a ¢mall sack plac- ed on the stage before the ‘mind-reader.’ The sack is bottomless; that is to say, the notes flutter through a hole cut in the floor to the cellar, where they are pounced upon by stage hands and other assistants in the good work of befvoling the public. The answers given are generally of small im portance; the point which specially appea's to the imagination of the questiouer is that his question should be exactly repeat: ed. There is a pocket in the sack which contains a number of blank pieces of paper folded like notes. When a eufficient nimber of questions from the audience have been received, the mind-reader stoops down and dips her hand into the pocket of the sack. Slowly she raises that hand, tightly clenched, and the audience can see that the mental strain is intense. The speaking tube runs up the leg of the table close to her ear. The whisper which comes from the tube ia inaudible, save to her. Then begins this highly entertaining per- formance. *The question whch comes to me from this piece of paper is,“ Shall I ree J. L. tomorrow ?” Sizned‘G. BY My an- swer is that it will depend upon how G. B. conducts himself. Is that correct? Ie the question correct, please? Will the writer inform me if I have correctly read his note? There is an embarrasing pau-e. Finally, afier much shuffling, a yoang man with a red tace rises to admit that he wrote the qnestion,aad he sits duwa again, amid the laughter of the audience. And so the game goes on. As fast as the stage bands in the cellar can deciper the meesages they may be repeated by the ‘mind-reader’ on the stage. Of course, a number of quec- ticns are not answered at all, but a little practice in this work makes the ‘mind- reader’ amazingly proficent in ambiguity in the event of failure, and the general opinion is that perhaps the etrain on her mind was becoming too great.

Speaking before the Agricultural Commitiee of the House of Commons a short time ago Professor Robertson dwelt at some length on the necessity of making careful selection of the eggs shipped for British corsumption. He said ‘‘Some provision has been made for the carriage of eggs. The demand in Great Britain for all perishable food products is always a discriminating demand. In_ this counury eggs are eggs, and you seldem hear a housekeeper speak of eggs being small or large. In England eggs are sold in different grades according to their weight by the long hundred or ten dozens. In these matters, apart from the size of the eggs, the British people are very fastidious and discriminating in regard to appearance and condition. The Minister of Agiculture asked me to accom- pany him toa conference of the egg men in Western Ontario on this subject last winter. A few of the points that were brought to the attention of the of the Minster of Agriculture were these: It is expected that in July, 35 car loads of eggs will be goinyr forward requiring eold storage on steamships, 50 car-loads in August, and 60 car lords in September. They assumed that probably one quarter more would be sent by other skippers from Western Ontario who were not represented at the meeting. Since then by reason of the pros- pect of an almost excluding tariff barrier erected by the United States a very much larger proportion of the eggs from Canada must necessarily find another outlet, and that will increase the shipment: of eggs very largely to Great Britain through these cold storage conveniences.

A BOGUS LORC’S CAREER.

Sidney Lascelles, alias ‘‘Lord Beresford,” has just been marricd to Miss Pelky, a rich Rhode Island girl, whose relatives have in- vested heavily in property in Fitzgerald, Ga. Eight years ago Lascelles was married to Miss Lillienthal, of Yonkers, N. Y., in Pittsburg, Pa. She was a woman of im- mense wealth, and only a few months ago obtained a divorce from Lascelles. Soon after his first marriage he became involved in money troubles in Georgia and was sentenced to the penitentiary for seven years. He was pardoned in January last, and, coming im- mediately to Fitzgerald, was successful from the first. Lascelles began in an insurance brokerage busiuess, then established a com- mercial brekerage, and now occupies the largest brick building in a wholesale jobbing traue. A short time ago he bid in the light and water franchise for Hitzzerald, and resold it ata profit of $10,000. Lascelles has been accorded a hearty welcome by all classes of the town, and has lately been a society favor- ire. He is now condncting the largest bnsi- ness in Fitzgerald and is generally acknowled- ged to have been extremely successful. His marriage was a very quict affair, at whice the Mayor of the town acted as best man. It is understood that Mr. Lascelles and wife have decided to make Fitzgerald their permaneut home, and they are preparing to build a handsome residence in General avenue.

RACE WAR IN ARKANSAS.

An Atkins, Ark., dispatch cave: —A race war ig in pregress in Lee township, Pope ‘y five miles south of Atking,in hich twoor three men have siready beea killed or fatally wouaded, and the community is ina State of great excitement, with a eer: ious outbreak I:kely to occur at any mon- ent. The trouble began Sunday night when a party of three or four negroes attacked two white mer, Jeese Nickels and J. R. Hodes. Nickles was cut by the negro- es, Warrants had been i-sued for the negro- es on Monday, but they declared that they would not be arrested. Reason Egg (white) helped them resist and when officers went to the scene Reason Egg attacked Cons- table E'ge with a koife and inflicted a dangerous injury. The constable succeeded in arresting Reason Egg after shooting him in the arm. Last night one of the negroer, Wm. Gaylord, who bad participated in the riots was taken from hie home hv a mob, suppored to be composed of white men, and after being stripped was tied to a post and beaten into invenstibility. He was alive, but was unconscious when found and bas since died. The whole country is stirred up end further outbreake are looked for at an¢r moment.

SIBERIAN HCRRORS DENIED.

Lieutenant Colonel W. H. Waters, the military attache of the British Embassy at St. Petersburgh, has just returned from a 4,000 miles sleigh ride from St. Petersburg to Vladivostock, on the Northern Pacific ocean, in midwinter. He gives an emphatic denia!, of the stories told of Siberian horrors. Dur- ing the whole journey he saw nothing to justi- fy the startling tales told on the subject, and says that in the depth of the Russian winter, with ninety degrees of frost, he found the exiles travelling in comfort, smoking and sing- ing, and in every case well clothed and well fed. Any prisoner falling lame or iil is plac- edina carriage and driven to the nearest hospital. In a majority of cases, the Colonel asserts, the Siberian exile is better off than‘ if at howe, and he adds that political prisoners, unless they have committed a serious non- political crime, are not imprisoned, thei- heads are not shaved and they are not fettern ed. Even the Poles, exiled for taking part ie insurrections, are now, according to Colona Waters, in many cases free to return to Russir y and several of them are employed as govern- ment officials.

VERY LIKE A PLAGUE.

Twenty or more buildings in the neighborhood of 64 South street, New York City, are literally swariing with bugs imported from India. It appears that last September Chas. Griffen, who has a astor- age warehouse, received 70 bags of corian- der seed from India. The price fell then and the seed has remained there ever since, With the coming of warm weather the seeds commenced to open, A day or 80 later a few millions of bugs emerged aud wandered allover the place. They filled the hallways, the offices and vis'ted the neighboring stores. South street com menc- ed to think that a modern Egyptian plague bad errived. Comp'aints were sent to the board of health.

An inspector ealled en Griffen, and he had the seed taken away. The bug-, how- ever, refused to move, and are ctill in possession.

Griffen says thev breed rapidly, but live only 24 hours. As far as can be Jeurned, the birth rate exceeds the death rate by a few hundred per cent. The soup and grav- ies at a neighboring restaurant are thick- ened with bugs. Thev are baked into bread by the adjacent baker, until it looke like currant loaf. Nearby bartenders mix them into cocktails and pousse cafe, and they rollick in the grocers’ sugar #nd spices. Business is almost suspended, and the block may have to be abandoned.
