I had spent ten strenuous years in tropical journalism-or rather journalism in the tropics-whilc he had P088915 away at political propaganda and organization. In 1905 he helped to form the Labour Party-Adistinct and separate from the I.L.P.)—to raise funds and provide candidates. In the followlll! year's general el- ection he and 28 others ‘were re- turned as the nucleus of the Labour Party in Parliament.

In. i911 Church Brotherhoods were much inwogue, holding what were called Pleasant Sunday After- noons, the feature of which usually was an address on some topical soc‘al question. I was asked to the platform at Brourghton P.S.A. when the speaker was Mr. Mac- donald. his subject being, “The Spiritual Aspect of the Labour Movement." Never before or since have I listened to a more masterly cogent appeal to the intellectually apathetic to rouse themselves to n. realization of the seriousness of the social situation into which the country had drifted.

Curiously enough also on the plat- form on that occasion was a bro- ther of the late Mr. John L. Thomson. one of the foremost an- alytical chemists in Edinburgh. It may be mentioned that "Ram- sey" eventually "got" “Robble" as they familiarly called one another. Mr. Brown ran unsuccessfully as Labour candidate for Mid-Iothian in 1906, letting in the Tory ohm-ll- date in the three-comered fight in Gliidstones old constituency. Later the seat was captured by labour, but since 1925 has returned to the Tory column.
