At the Matriculation Examination held at King’s College, Windsor, Nova Scotia, Octo ber 2nd, the order of merit was as follows :—

Osborne, 200; Sampson, 180; Simonds, 135; Hallett, 130; Tueker, 209; Farish, 95; Morris, 92; Gregory, 87. Graham, 80.

‘oo much credit cannot be given to Messrs. Fredk, Usberne and Wuliam Sampson for acquitting themselves so well. Both these gentlemen were prepared for their examina- tion by the Rev. Alfred Osborne.

Our ‘Island Boys” hold their own in com- petition with their fellows, in all }.arts of the world. An extensive law tirm in New York, recently advertised for an assistant in their office, the applicants to submit to an examin- ation, and the position to be awarded to the party best qualified to fill it. There were no less than sixty applications fer the vacancy, and we are pleased to learn that Jas. ©. Me- Eachen, youngest sou of Mr. John McKachen, of this city, succeeded in securing the posi- tion against the field, among whom there is no doubt that there were some smart young men,~—-Argus.

City Council.

A meeting of the City Council was held on Monday evening. Present, the Mayor, Recorder, Councillors Ings, Blake, Smith, Lawson, Horne, Byrne, Davy, Beer and Mortis.

Councillor Blake moved, and Councillor Lawson seconded, that the resolution awarding Mc. Tomlins, Secretary of the Licensing Board, $100 for services be re- scinded.

Gouncillors Ings and Beer spoke in favor of the motion, and Byrne and Morris spoke against it. ;

The motion was carried, 6 to 3.

The Mayor infermed the Council that Councillor Koughan, had resigned, and that an election to fill the vacancy would be held on Saturday next.

The resignations of the City Auditors- Messrs. J. R. Brecken and F. W. Hynd- rian—were read and accepted. The resig- aations were tendered becanse the Auditors

eve not paid. The Mayor says that the [ohare never sent in their bjils.

The appointment of auditors was deferred to the next meeting,

Petitions were read from vertain inhabit- ants of Orlebar and DesBrisay streets, ask- for a platform and other improvements for the streets en which they reside. The estimate for street improvements and re- pairs had been almost exceeded. Other parts of the city required improvements as well as these streets ; therefore the prayer af the petiljonerg was not granted,

Goungillur Horne reported that the money granted for the repairs of streets had been nearly all expended. The work of repairing, instead of being finished, was enly commencing; and the streets were in a worse state now than inthe spring. He thought the City wouid have to give a further grant for street repairs this season er else becoming liable for damages for the loss of life or limbs.

Councillor Herne moved and, Councillor Smith seconded, that the gum of five hun- dred dollard adiditidnal, be expended for the maintenance of streets and squares the present year. Carried.

A letter was read from Mr. James Trainor, asking compensation for assist- ance rendered the police while in discharge of his duty as private watchman. It was laid on the table.

A letter was read from George Brace, and snojher from Mrs. Young, complaining of the high amounts at which their property was assessed, and asking for reductions. The Council took no action on the matter.

A retucn of arrears of rent due for stalls ané cellars in the Market House, was read, and a resolution was passed ordering the Clerk to collect them immediately.

Read « letter from Mr. Murdoch, stating that he could not furnish his report until the last of November. —

The monthly accounts were then read and ordered to be paid, with a few excep- tions,

Counciller Byrne moved and Councillor Morris seconded, that the sum of one hun- dred dollars*be presented to Dr. Strickland as an acknowledgement of his services in the fire department for the past fourteen

FP WVhiile Councillors Blake, Ings and Beer were anxious that the valuable services of Dr. Strickland should be _ recognized, they did not think the city finances could afford it. They, therefore, would not vote for such a recognition. Councillors Byrne and Morris spoke in favor of the motion. It was lost on the following division: Against -Ings, Beer, Horne, Blake. For---Byrne, Morris, Smith. Council adjourned.

The Sulitan’s note indicating such contempt for the Powers, also shows such a suicidal spirit that the Porte is gradually losing all its old sympa- thizers. The attempt to rouse public feeling by meetings against against Mr. Gladstone, specially, were miserable fail- ures and Jingo journals are gradually de- serting the Porte. The ‘‘ Standard” is in fact becoming thoroughly ministerial on many small subjects.

The condition of Irelaud causes daily greater anxiety and uneasiness. ‘The Gov- ernment have officially announced that Gal- way and Mayo are in a state of disturbance and require an additional police force. The proclamation made to this effect throws the expense of this extra force upon the Irish counties. Mr. Parnell talks of another tour to the United States to replenish his exche- quer for agitation. He wants to start a league newspaper. If the landlords refuse to discharge their public duties and to arm men on whom they can rely, the Lrish clans will rapidly increase and the Government become compelled to interfere.

The withdrawal of the best troops from Candahar is condemned in Anglo-Indian circles. Great distrust is expressed as to Gen. Phayre’s capacity to command in South Afghanistan.

The reports of Mr, Goschen’s return from Constantinople are premature.

The Debats of yesterday morning is of opinion that a blockade of the ports of Salonica and Smyrna would be fully as prejudicial to certain of the Great Powers and net only to France, as it would be to Turkey.

The Republique Francaise is more reserv- ed in discussing Eastern affairs. and is evi- dently disconcerted by the attitude of the semi-ofticial German press.

The ‘‘ World’s” cable special says it is understood that the British Government will not recede from its position in reference to Turkey in any event, no matter what the other Powers may do, The next step taken by her will probably be to take mea- sures for seizing the Custom House of the Turkish Empire, in the hope of reducing
