Two Boys Selected to Attend "Parliament" At Mt. Allison

The theme of the group discuss- ions was, “Be Yc Doers of the Word and not Bearers Only”, and the findings were presented at the Sunday afternoon session by the secretaries bf each group, Lloyd Peterson.. Carl Wright read a review of the pro- ceedings of the conference. and Dave Jackson delivered the mes- sage, dealing with the Kingdom of God. “The Kingdom is God’s con—

SUMUMERSIDE — A former Cape Traverse man, Vernon G. Howatt, now in Montreal, ‘has been transferred to Trinidad where he will be manager of a new branch of the Bank of Nova Scotia with whom he has been employed for several years. _

To make Canadians more aware of highway safety, the conference is sponsoring Safe Driving Week starting Monday. The campaign has the active sup- port of all provinces, municipal- ities, police forces, public serv- ice groups, women's and safety organizations.
Governor-General Massey said in a statement “This special week should serve to stress the vital role of the driver and the walker in reducing mortality and mutilation on our roads."
Prime Minister Dietenbaker in a statement issued by his office said “It is clea:ly our duty as Canadians to su p p ort whole- heartedly any and every etfort to saw lives and to prevent traffic accidents.”

During the 1957 Safe Driving Week there wer e 45 traffic deaths, compared with 67 in 1956 and 73. in 1955. The conference forecasts the death toll for the 1958 week will be 42.
Canada’s over-all traffic fatal- ity statistiCS continue to mount. They have risen from 1,975 in 1950 to 3,216 in 1957, with a toll of 3,400 forecast for this year.
Since 1946 about 32,000 Cana- dians have died violently on Ca- nadian streets and highways. That’s just 12,900 fewer than the 44,910 Canadians who died in the Second World War.
The number of persons injured has shown a similar increase, rising from 78,417 in 1957 to an estimated 80,000 for 1958.

liam DesRoches, 25, of Toronto was sentenced to serve three years in Dorchester Penitentiary when he appeared for sentence in Supreme Court here Friday morn- mg. ‘DesRoches, formerly of Day’s Corner, was convicted Wednesday of the theft of $60 and a safe from the store of J .P. Gaudet in Rich- mond.
Defence counsel J. Watson Mac- Naught, Q.C., asked lenincy for DesRoch-es when he addressed the court prior to the sentencing. He pointed out that DesRoches had “reached the turning point in his life” and “throwing the book” at him for this offense might harden him and turn him away from lead- ing a good life.

Mr. Stewart read DesRoches past record which included theft of an automobile, uttering forged cheques, theft of cheques and break, entry and theft.
Mr. Justice G.J. Tweedy told the court he found it difficult to arrive at a sentence ' this case. He felt that it was the turning point in DesRoches’ career but pointed out that the prisoner could he held in custody over and above the sentence because of past! crimes for which he could have been charged as a habitual crim- inal.
Judge Tweedy said he did not make a practice of addressing the convicted party before sentence, but stated he hoped anything he said would be absorbed by the convicted man during the time he

A Picton, ~Ont., man charged with being intoxicated In a public place was fined $20 and costs or 15 days. He pleaded guilty to the charge. ~
