"I asked him what influence he thought this cheap news-stand lit- erature was having on the children who read it." -

The truant officer took down an assortment of paper coured b0016- and a stack of papers eadh contain- ing a story of crime. The titles read: "Three Bad Men," "Tracy the Bandit", and "Life oi Jesse Jam . etc. 'Ihen' the officer took from a drawer of his desk a_coll_ection of revolvers, dlrks, bowie knives and sandbags, found amongst the pos- sessions of the boys who read the crime books.

Set New Pattern

Kiplings verseset virtually a new pattern, too. Free-swinging. it had a. gusty, hearty quality about it that carried conviction. -

Before long he earned the title "Poet of Empire." His "Reoesslo - a1" marking the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria's reign, became one of thc best-known poems of the time '

Other tales bore n. special appeal for children. "The Jungle Book," which u: nicled in an Indian set- ting the adventures of Mowgli quickly became popular and so die the “Just-So" stories.

In later years Kipllngk pen was less active but volumes continued to be published periodically. Last year he wrote a poem in connec- tlon with the King's Silver Jubilee.

RUDYARD KIPIJNG

Creator of “Kim," "Gunga Din," “Stalkey dz Company," "Mowgli," the swashbuckling "Sergeant Mul- vaney" and a host of other rare beings who roved the pages of a hundred books in verse and prose, Rudyard Kipling passed the last years of his life as a semi-recluse.

Shunning publicity, hidden in a moated and walled estate near the sieepy village of Burwash in Sus- sex, England, he became almost the "forgotten man" of literature. a sil- ent, shadowy figure of the past.

His works already had become classics by the time he was 30, and later years were virtually an anti- cllmax to the bright star that flamed out of India to dazzle the world in i891.

Yet he was active to the last. In i035, just 3B years after the re- sounding chords of "Recesslonal" immortalized Queen Victoria's dia- mond jubilee, he wrote "The King and the Sea" in celebration of the silver Jubilee of George V.

.The publlc—from "the colonel’s lady to Judy O’Grady"——continued i0 buy his works year after year, at a rate of more than 200.000 an- nually.

Although the formal honor of poet laureateshlp never came to him, he was hailed everywhere as "the poet of the Elnplre."

Moreover, he was the first im- glishman to receive the Nobel prize for literature, awarded in 1907. The selection came as a. bombshell to those critics who had accused him of everything from jingoism to hack journalism.

Born In Bombay

Born Dec. 30. 1865, in Bombay. India, Kipling was the son of John Lockwood Kipling, professor of ar- chitectural sculpture in the Brit- ish ‘School of Art at Bombay, and of Alice MacDonald Kipling, one of four brilliant daughters of a Wesleyan clergyman.

Sent home to school in England when he was six, young Rudyard attended Westward Ho College, which later sewed as the back- ground for “Stalkey d: Co." His eye- =l2ht failed him at i0 due to over- strain. enforcing the use of t ick spretacles with divided lenses. ut even with these he was unable to sen clearly.

In 1882 he returned to India, and for seven years was an ink-splashed sub-edlto" on papers at Lahore and Allahabad. gaining fame in the country by writing on the side army ballads and tales of British life in India. Then he tried America.

Jobless in Unilelrstates

He landed in San Francisco in 1889 and made his way slowly across the continent. trying to find a place on American newspapers. He later said he always was rebuffed with- "ut a chance to state .hls qualifica- lions.

In i891 he sailed for lmgland and almost starved in a London rlarret until he found a publisher for a new edition of "Plain Tales from the Hills." It and his trunkiul of India pamphlets, books and poems sold like hot cakes.

Money permitted him to indulge the waliderlust that had driven him from India and in i892 he roamed Ceylon, Australia and the United States.

In New York he looked up Wol- cott Balestler, a young New York author, with whom he had shared

returned from s. wedding trip to Japan and, the decision made, they established hemsel w at Brattie- boro, Vt.. when ma. Kipling's family had a large estate. They bought a place which Kipling named "Naulahka," after a work on which he had collaborated with his brother-ln-law when he was scratching out a miserable »exlst- ence in London.

Kipling wandered over the countryside . and visited many places along the Atlantic coast, the information that he gained going into "Captains Courageous.’ He produced score of other volumes in Vermont, including "The Seven Seas." “Many Invention." the two “Jungle Books" and the “Just S0 Stories," the last named for the children in his own nursery, based on characters or landmarks with which the youngsters were familiar.

Pests Invade Kiplingb Eden

Americans took to Kiplings work as enthusiastically as had their British cousins overseas. With this. however. came hero worship that was especially distasteful ‘to Kip- ling. l-le wanted to live alone with his family and neighbors, but autograph hunters swarmed down on the place. He posted a rig-n on the gatepost warning them to keep out, but they waylaid him when he ventured abroad. When they couldn't see him, they telephoned.

fled. They went to Africa on a journey which took them through Egypt and thq Sudan down to the cape. The prospect of returning to the impol-tunltles of American ad- mirers was too appalling, and on their return from the south the family took an old house at Rat- tlngdean. a Sussex town foul) miles east of Brighton, Erlglands great shore resort. ' The public followed him there-_ scores of American tourists in the summer and his countrymen all the year round. H‘: struggled against Well’ lmportunities for two years. then went with his family for a visit to Amzrica.

It was an lrmost fatal trip,, for Kipling contracted pneumghlg and for weeks lay at the point of death in a New York hotel. l-Ils illness was front page news in both the Unit- ed States and England.

Discourses to Deaf Ears

Except for his wife and daughter, almost his only confidant of late years was a stone-deaf octogenar- ian roadmender, William Lavender, who "watched" rather than listen- ed to Klpllngs conversational monologue; and described the poet:

“A nloe gentleman with a won- derful head at education. and I only wish‘! could have heard what he was saying. I've known Mr. Kip- ling for 25 years, but I've hardly heard a word he said.”

Occasionally he ventured abroad, to his favorite spa at Maricnbad, in Czechoslovakia; or, on rare oc- casions, he appeared at literary banquets-a bald-headed sturdy little figure, with his famous "beetle" eyebrows bristling, brown eyes twinkling behind small gold- rimmed spectacles. and square-teed boots redolent of dd-fashioied shoe blacklng.

Modernity sought him out, and six of his stories were filmed- “Klm," "Captains Courageous," “The Light That Filled," “Soldiers Three," "Toomai of the Elephants," and "His Apologies." He made marginal corrections on the scen-

ario scripts, but never saw the screened interpretations of his characters.

An unsolved enigma of Kiplings long career was why he never was named poet laureate of Eng- land. It embodied a strange legend which some saw as tragedy-tinged, but if it had that effect upon the

author, no word to that effect over came from him. . Jllor two score years. commen-

tators ascribed Kipflngh failure to achieve the highest honor that maybe awarded an English bard to his having "insulted" Queen Vic- toria in one of his “Barrack Room Ballads."

The reputedly ill-feted poem described "the Widow at Windsor" as sending her soldier: to "barbar- lous were" and buying "'alf o’ creation" with Iinglish blood. It ran. in part:

And as decade after decade passed, with one poet laureate after another dying and a. successor chosen—but not Kipling-the leg- end grew that even though the original target of offense, Queen Victoria, had died in 1901, yet court zlzlifclea irrevocably wen closed to

Intimate friends of the poet branded that part of the tale a canard, pointing out that Kipling was presented at a. royal levee in 1925 by his cousin, Prime. Minister Stanley Baldwin, and that four years later he was house guest of King George at Balmoral, Scotland.

Klplhag the Author

No popular author of his time placed a higher value on his works and none received such prices as Kipling, a shrewd bargainer, ex- acted from publishers. He acquired wealth and in his late years could afIord to refuse $1.25 a. word from‘ an American firm which wanted him to wriic a story for them.

Yet a Kipling legend indicates

. too that all was grist that came to

his mill. The tale is that an auto- graph hunter, thinking to trap him into signing something, wrote:

“Ivunderstand that you receive a shilling a word for your writings and enclose one shilling for one word."

The laborer, at that, was worthy of his hire for he tolled at produc- tion and was his own most exact- ing critic. A friend who had often seen him in his study at Brattle- boro said he l zembled a "very large and shaggy mastiff teasing and buffeting a tiny mouse over a broad sheet of white paper, the mouse being the author's pen."

His following was tremendous. Succeeding generations of boyhood read and remembereil the shudder- ing enchantment of “The Jungle Book," “Klm," “The Reincarnation of Krishna Muivaney," "The Light That Failed," "The Mark of the Beast," "Captains Courageous." “The Phantom Rickshaw," “Puck of Pook's Hill," "Stnlky 8s 00., "The Marl Who Would Be King," “Soldiers Three,’ "Wee Willie Winkle,’ "Plain Tales from the Hills,” and many another story of strange adventure.

And they took inspiration from Wading and agony frolrrrecltlng in crimson-faced, halting phrases under the menacing frown of “elo- cution" teachers-the lines of Kip- lingb "IF." whose words still form the perennial theme of omateiy printed wall cards and calendars the world over. .

Almost from the turn of the cen- tury onwards, barrel-nested bari- tones in vaudeville houses from Klplingis pwn Calcutta to Cheap- Slde. 101160“. bodmed the thunder- ing refrain of "on the Road u; Mandalay” and no male quartet reached its repeltoric zenith with- out announcing “They're 'angln' Danny Deever in the momin'l"

Kipling never liked fame. He was a shy man of Yorkshire de- scent, and the dialect of that reg- ion explains the origin of his pe- culiar name-"klp" meaning a pointed hill and "ling" a torrent or waterfall. _
