POTATO EMBARGO

Mr. A. E. MacLean, M.P., who has been a persistent knocker of the Em- pire ‘Irade Agreements ever since flzelr negotiation in 1032, ls quoted as stating, in the House of Commons last week, that "the poor potato grower of the east was never thought of when those agreements were go- ing through," and as condemning the Bennett Government for not pressing for a removal of the Bri- tish embargo on Canadian potatoes when the Ccnfernce was in session.

Such misstatement on the part of a man of Mr. MacLearfs political experience is inexcusable. In the first place, the Prince County rc- prasentativc is fully aware that the embargo was first applied to Canad- ian potatoes in 1925, under the Mac- kenzie King regime, and that Liberal efforts to have it removed were un- successful. Prior ‘to the Ottawa Conference of 1932, the situation was again put before the British Depart- ment of Agriculture by the Hon. Robert Weir, Minister of Agriculture in the Bennett Government, assisted by officials of his own department and backed up by a delegation from the Maritime Provinces, who made a special trip to England for this purpose. The negotiations were again unsuccrssful.
