Clas. Derroud, treasurer of the Massa chusetts Home Missionary Soeicty, bas been convicted on a charge of embezz-

ling the funds of the society. The deficit is from $20,000 to $60,000. Mrs. Estelle Johnson, wite of ex-Gov-

ernor Charles P. Johnson, of Missouri, committed suicide in St. Louis on Tuesday night. Grief over the death of a child had brought on mental de- rangement,

On the arrival of the Pacific Mail steamship ‘Crescent City’ at New York on Wednesday last, purser Wheeler left the ship taking $JU,U0V of the com- pany’s money and has not since }eon seen.

Lord Charles Innes Ker, ason of the sixth Duke of Roxburghe, has gone into bankruptey. On an examination in the case at the Windsor County Court the debts were stated at £28,000. Nothing was said as to the assets.

Alfred M. Church, of Norwich Conn., made three aitempts to burn a house Wednesday evening, the fire depart- ment being called out twice. The third time he was seen by a neighbor, and being arrested the next day, con- fessed.

Theodore Schimper, a wealthy pock- etbook manufacturer of New York, while bathing in a bath-house in that city on Tuesday, took a dive and struck his head on the bottom, breaking his neck. He died in the hospital subse- quently.

The will of the late Thomas Wilson, a prominent {Baltimore Quaker, who

At Trenton, N. J., John Tourdon tied his wife up in a bag, naked, and when some neighbors discovered her in that condition she was immediately released bnt expired shortly afterward. Tourdon then picked up his little boy and run- ning to the canal jumpedin. He was drowned, but the child got ashore.

Violent storms in the Gulf of Finland have eaused the river Vaga to rise to the level of the streets. The canals in the centre of St. Petersburg have over- flowed ; the faubourgs are under water ; iron roofs were blown from houses and churches in all directions. Notices have been issued warning tho inhabi- tants to take precautions against floods.

Kiog Stephen Pharoah, hereditary ruler of the Montauk tribe of Indians, and fifth-nine years of age, died of quick consumption, near Montauk, August 30, and was buried next day from the African Methodist Episcopal Church. It is said that he leaves no successor to reign in his stead over his tribe, he being the last of the Montauk Indians that had pure blood in their veins.

The Spanish Minister of Colonies telegraphs Captain General Blanco, of Cuba, authorizing him to draw against the Spanish Treasury $5,000 daily. The newspapers say official informa- tion from Hollgium and Santiago de Cuba represents perfect tranquility prevails among the inhabitants; the principal chiefs of the old insurrection remain loyal. Heavy continuous rains prevail in the greater part of the {sland.

A young lady who teaches Sunday» school (in the summer) at Swampscott is in the habit, after the regular lesson is ended, of asking questions in natural history. Last Sunday she asked : ‘ What bird is large enough to carry a

man?’ <A little girl held up her hand|

and said : ‘I know; a lark.’ ‘ Oh, no!’ said the teacher, ‘larks are not large enough to carry men.’ ‘ Yes, they are,’ said the youngster. ‘My papa goes away for two or three days, and my mamma says he’s gone off on a lark.’

Some serious accidents have occurred during the recent bull fights in Spain. At Figueras, a man‘ was killed, anda soldier and a woman were severely in- jured. At Ruzala, near Valencia, two amateurs of the sport were wounded. Daring a bull baiting at St. Roque, in the neighborlieod of Gibraltar, the tor- reador Hermosville received somo seri- ous wounds. -At Amporia a more un- lucky individual has lost his life, and the Epoca, remarking that the ‘sequel will be given shortly,’ announess the inauguration at Guadix of a new and very pretty bull ring.
