The Free Press ventures to predict that if Mr. Camp is to achieve any success in mobilizing those whom it was once fashionable to describe as “eggheads" for Mr. Diefenbaker. he must seek in the first instance to dispell Mr. Dief- enbaker's strong conviction that eggheads are both unreliable and dangerous.

This. it adds. "may be a formid- able undertaking because it D1‘0b' ably did not escape the Conservative leader's attention that Mr. Heath Macquarrie. generally accounted one of the remaining Conservative egg- lleads. was a proponent of the sec- ret ballot. at last week's conven- tion."

That John Diefenbaker, P.C.. Q.C.. M.A.. LL.B.. LL.D.. D.C.L., F.R.C.S., is an anti-“egghead” is a theory sediilously propollnded in Peter Newman's book, “Renegade in Power". But there is a difference between snobbery and intellectual- jlsm. and we find this strikingly re- vealed in Mr. Newman’s criticism of the Diefenbaker regime. As, for example, where he says that while the rural constituencies remained loyal to Diefenbaker. Conservative support collapser "among the well- heeled. the well-born. and the well educated." Or where he pictures Hon. Avin Hamilton as smoking five- cent cigars and as being "a lovable hayseed whose explosive and some- times crude remarks could be con- doned because he was strange to the ways of city folk."

Neither Mr. Camp nor Mr. Mac- quarrie, we fancy. would subscribe tcr-the idea that one is necessarily an anti-egghead for the reasons a_ e given.

If the con\'ent.ion of "Conser- vgtive thinkers" is to be a -conven- tion merely of the snobs of the pity, it won’t matter much how itfsfgoes. But we gather that it is in- tdided to be something else entire- ly: having nothing whatever to do wlth the cult of downgrading the rank and file of the people——among whom. indeed. there are quite as nrmny capable ‘r.hinkers—“egg- hfids" if you like—-as there are among‘ the "well-heeled" sophisti- cites of the plush urban areas.

revealing. Washington approved ear. ports of U.S. goods to Cuba wortli $13.4 million. while Canada's ex- ports amounted to $10.8 million and Britain‘s were about $5 million.

We take these figures from the Toronto Globe and Mail, which char- ges the United States with putting itself in an absurd. not to say hypo- critical position, in this matter. it is apparent that there is no valid- ity in the U.S. complaints against its allies, and the suspicion must be that they are made largely for home consumption—to convince the U.S. electorate that the Administra- tion is not “soft on Cuba."

Winter Warriors

While digging ourselves out of the worst snowstorm of the winter. let those of us who only have to do that and don't have to spend all our waking hours on emergency jobs that the storm has created-—in keeping open our lines of trans- portation and communication, ser- vicing our food and fuel require- ments. and whatnot-—spare a grate- ful thought for those who do.

All our community facilities that can be affected by adverse weather need staffs of expert workers on call day and night at this time of the year. and last Sunday night's storm hadn't blown itself out on Monday before many of them were on the job. They are still hard at work, battling Old Man Winter's ravages and insuring that there will be as little interruption as possible in the services we are accustomed to enjoy.

This goes particularly for the personnel of our carferry and rail- way services, our snowplow oper- ators and telegraph and telephone linesmen. But there are many oth- ers—mailmen, taxi drivers, truck- ers of necessary commodities— right down to the brave youngsters who set a fine example In deliver- ing our local newspapers in Char- lottetown yesterday.

A salute to all our citizens. young and old. whose jobs keep them outdoors on our behalf in sleet and snow aiui freezing tem- peratures! Their skill. their hardl- hood and devotion to duty are what enable the rest of us to sit comfort- ably at home, or attend to our bus- inesses. and grumble if the trains are a little late or the roads not promptly cleared.

New Stamp Issues

With Ottawa planning special stamp issues for our Confedemtion centennial observances. perhaps more attention should be given to recent developments in this field of designing, of which there are note- worthy examples in recent stamps issued by two of the newer Com- monwealth countries.

One is the new set of Tonga. stamps. Where stamps usually are square or rectangiilar—on occasion triangular or diamond-shaped-the new Tonga issues are perfectly circular; and they are printed on gold paper. The result is a great de- mand for the islands’ stamps--even before they reached Tonga from the printing firm in Britain.

The second country to break with philatelic traditions is Sierra Leone. This African nation's new stamps, issued on February 10. are not regular-shaped at all. but are the same shape as the country. Furthmerinore, they do not have to be licked. Pressed on to an envelope. they stick by themselves. This in- novation, according to the firm re- sponsible for the adhesive. is the first major variation in philatelic thinking since the first stamps were issued in 1840.

‘‘All of which," comments the Winnipeg Free Press in calling at- tention to these innovations, "makes Canada's efforts at commemora- tives look is bit drab and stereo- typed."

The predominant reaction re- ported from all districts outside French-Canada is a rising hos- tlliiy to the extremism and ex- cesses which unfortunately are mingled with the more reason- able expression of Quebec's po- sition. The reaction seems to be closely following the same pat- tern In all parts of Canada. It says: "We made a pact in 1867; we observe the letter and the spirit of that pact: we recognize that Quebec has not utilized its share in the partnership to its best advantage. and we will gladly help Quebeckers correct that handicap of their own mak- ing: but we will not accept the unreasonable demands of ex-

The position of the rest of Ca- nada has been crystallized neatly by Ottawa's Mayor. Char- lotte Whitton. In response to demands that street signs replaced by new bilingual signs, she said: “Certainly. But first show me where the law author- izes me to spend the taxpayers‘ money on the expense of re- placing lhe present legal and adequate signs with costly new two-language signs."

From all parts of Canada the same story is reaching Ottawa. sympathetic to reasonable re- quests by Quebec. but is grow- ing adamantly opposed to exces- sive demands. The Icelandic co- lony in Manitoba lines up with English-speaking tario. The same stand is taken by the Uk- rainian and German population on the Prairies. by the Scandia- Viana in Alberta where French is only the fifth language. by the Highland Scots of the Mari- times, by the Italian colony in Toronto. by the Dutch and Ger- mans in BC. and by the Poles in Manitoba.

very hard to expect a man to drive ii big machine like the plows without some experience. The men should be trained to follow a different track. to keep pushing the snow off the road, and no two plows should be in the one district.

I wonder how many people know that some of our grocery warehouses are unheated. which means perisha e goods are frozen such as canned milks. baby foods. fruits. soaps. etc. We pay very high prices for our foods. I think lfliey should be stored where they are not allow- ed to freeze.

Third. I would like to mention our regional high schools. I think they put too much I t r e s s on sports. The number of hockey games is not important to a slu- dent next June when he writes his final exams. I know of one high school where the pupils are taken out of class F d y noon to play hockey. Two-thirds of them failed their last exam. I think sports are good but not during classes.
