Halifax boy named McPhee had one of his hands terribly shattered by the explosion of a dynamite cartridge which he found on the street. Something should, if possible, be done to cause persons using this danger- ous explosive to keep it beyond the reach of children and others who are ignorant of its destructive power.

Tue Reporter brings a charge of a_ very perious character against Dr. Edward Far- rell, M. P. P. It is nothing less than that of having attempted to obtain money from the County of Halifax on false representa- tions. This charge is the most serious that has been brought for many years against eny of our public men, and we trust for the eredit of our Province, that 1t will be satis- factorily explained.—Hzx. Tue Irish Catholic Union, of Montreal, te the numberof about 3,000, principally youths, celebrated St. Patrick’s Day by a procession through the principal streets of the city, on the 17th. The Irish uational societies resolved to take no part in the demonstration, out of respect to the mem- ory of the late Pope. The display was contrary to the wishes of the Catholic elergy, who used their best efforts to pre- vent it, but without success. Crowds of

~ ‘Tur trial of the prisoner William McCan- nel, charged with discharging pistols dur- ing the disturbance on the 12th of July last, was commenced at two o clock to-day. Mr. John Longworth appeared for the pro- gecution, and Messrs. F. Peters and J. Palmer for the defence. After a Jury was obtained for the trial of the prisoner, the Attorney General asked the Court to dlis- miss the remaining jurors of the pannel. Mr. Thomas Dawson, representing the pannel, went before the _bar and pleaded fer the payment of the jurors during the time the Court was in session at George- town. He was instructed that the Court was not permitted to pay them during a recess, but that they would be granted mileage for their return to and from the Court. The remaining jurors were then

dismissed.

that the Ressians are constructing a railway ‘from Bourgas to Jamboli. As Jamboli is | connected with Adrianople by rail the new line will enable Russia to send troops from | Odessa direct to Central'and Southern Bul- | garia and the “Bgean Sea. The Governmental paper, the North @er- /man Gazette, adverting to certain articles in |lhe English, Polish and American press, ridicules the rumor attributing to Germany ‘an intention to annex Poland. A leading editorial in the Times, after | considering the terrible consequences which would follow a great War, and the tremen- dous responsibility of the Power which brings it on, then concludes as follows : | ‘Nevertheless, England must adhere to the demand that the entire Treaty of San Ste- fano be submitted to the Congress. The alternate plan suggested by Russia would raise the previous question on every clause of the Treaty, except those which Russia of her own actord brought before the Con- gress, but a far more important issue |than the interest of any Power is at stake. We take our stand upon the existing treaties — the one hope of statesmen for the future peace of the world must be founded upon the develop- ment of a system of public law and upon the maintenance and increase of the author ity of treaties. If the public law of Europe is valid until nominally repealed, any new arrangement between Russia and Turkey fall ipso facto by its very nature within the | scope of the treaties of 1856 and 1871. Ht }is not even within the competence of the Congress to decide whether or not certain clauses of the neutrality shall fall within | the cognizance of the signatures of the old ‘treaty. It is bound to take the new instru- ment into consideration as a whole.

A despatch to Lloyd’s from Galtz, says that several sailing ships, tugs and lighters passed up and down the Danube. Safety torpedoes are buried, but not all removed. It is officially reported that the river will be opened on Thursday.

The Grand Duke Nicholas, in order to obviate difficulties about a military escort passing through the city, proposes to come |here in the Imperial yacht Hyrklick ; the | Sultan would then return the visit on board the yacht. Nothing, however, is settled; 'and the Porte, out of consideration for the ‘other powers, has requested the Grand Duke not toembark at Euyakdier, where the Imperial yacht is now anchored.

Montreat, March 17.

, In the case of Colonel Rhodes vs. ex-Di- rectors of the Metropolitan Bank, the coun- sel for the plaintiff stated that the defend- ants, Hon. Henry Starnes, Henry Judah, Henry Hogary and Maurice Cuvillier, were Directors from June, 1871, to June, 1875, and the action is directed against them for $10,000, which his client has suffered the loss through the mismanagement and u- regularities of the defendants’ connection with the Bank; that the reports presented by the Directors in 1872, 1873 and 1874 were false in several respects, and that no provision was made for bad and doubtful debts, although reports stated this had been done; also that large sums were taken by the defendants from the Bank for the pur- pose of speculating in stock. Mr. Starnes’ advance in 1874 amounted to $325.581; the largest amount borrowed by the Directors at any one time was $663,572. The total loss suffered by the Bank on account of the above advances is stated to be $139,042,

Ayuimer, March 16.

Last night a man named Clark who was intoxicated, drew a revolver and shot Bowen, a young man who was in peaceful conversation with him. Bowen’s recovery is doubtful.

Lonpon, Ont., March 16,

The streams are already reaching freshet height. A Hamilton farmer, while driving over a small creek, last night, was upset, he and his wife, son and daughter being thrown in the water. Hamilton and daughter were rescued in and unconscious state and the boy picked up dead.

Dorcaxster, N, §., March 16.

The case of the Queen vs. Hudlah Shaw, hotelkeeper of Sackville, has been before the Court since Thursday. The defendant was accused of taking $75 from the trunk of Sarah Curtis, a boarder, and of having appropriated a number of other articles. The case excited much local interest, the parties being in respectable position and well known. Mr. J. B. Peck appeared for the Crown, and Messrs. Dickson and True- man for the complainant; Mr. Chris. Mil- ner was attorney and Mr. D. L. Haning- ton counsel for the prisoner. A large num- ber of witnesses were examined, and the case went to the jury this afternoon; the jury, after four hours’ absence, were unable to agree, and were discharged.

A despatch from Paris says six thousand people are attacked with measles at Lyons.
