Now someone was pounding nn that tree outside and they were myee frightened young squirrels. Who could it be? Thump! Thump! Thump! With each thump the mug squirrels clung together cloger. Then the doorway just a- bnve them was darkened. Some- 3uP. was looking in.

"What are you doing in mv house?" demanded a strange voice.

"We didn't know it was your house. We didn't know it was day- body's house," said Ragiall. He was xpeaking for all three.

"We had to find a place to sleep. This was the only place we could find, and there was nobody at home." explained Broadtali.

"We'll get out right away.” said Hushtail. His voice was squeaky. He was a scarcd young Squirrel. You see they felt trapped, They were afraid to stay. but they were more afraid to try to go out because this stranger was blocking the doorway.

They ran out on the nearest limb and jumped over to another tree. Then they looked to see who their visitor was. It was someone they never had seen before, and they stared most impolitely. It was a bird very near the size of Eiacky the Crow. His cost was black, and on his wings were patches of white. The sides of his neck were white. But it was the cap that the tree squirrels stared at most, it was pointed and so very red, the bright red called scarlet. And what a hill he had! It was long and pointed. Just the thought of being struck with that bill made the three squiircls shiver and shake. Who could he be? It was Ragtail who finally ventured to ask him.

"I'm Logcock, the Pileated Wood- pecker. largest of the Woodpecker family up here in the Green Forest." replied the stranger. Then he threw back his head and struck the tree with his bill. A good sized chip dropped down to the ground.

"Is that the way you made the house we slept in?" asked Bushtall timidly.
