The Arrew Hung In Midair.

¥en actor teRs the following story: I remember seeing at a German theater in Wiesbaden a performance of the drama of *‘ William Tell.’’ I was told by the manager of the theater that the stage effects in the play were extremely fine, and that I was to wait until the scene where Tell's splendid marksman- ship was made apparent to ses some- thing that would astonish me

I did wait patiently as I could until that scene,and I was certainly aston- ished. The scene arrived where Tel! is ‘to shoot the apple from his son’s de- -yoted head. As I gathered from the mubsequent occurrence, the apple and Tell’s crossbow were connected by an

invisible wire, along which the arrow was to speed to the target. At the proper cue the arrow did speed half way toward the apple and there stuck, to all appearance in midair.

In vain did the doughty Tell shake his bow to“‘joggle’’ the arrew to its mark.

The sonaf Tell looked:very frighten- ed and didn’t know what was happen- ing. The apple firmly fixed on his youthful «cranium was bobbing about, the audience was laughing, and the Jaugh burst into a roar:when one ot Gesler’s guards, looking painfuliy like a gentleman who might officiate on one of the tramcars during the day, took in the situation and coming forward from his position at the side of .young Tell, calinly gave the recalcitrant arrow a smart rap:with his spear, when it sped on its way aud buried itself imthe apple on the. bay's head. —Pearson’s Weekly.

Cork Legs Were Scarce.

One day in 18%0 Senetor Hampton was goiny, on his crutches from the sen- ate chamber to the house of representa- tives. In the middie of the big rotunda he met avery large man, also on erutch- es. He was a member of congress from Illinois, a Republican, whose name I cannot now recall. Hampton stopped him and kindly asked his name and how he had received his injury. After giving his name the congressman said amputation was neoessary by reason of a shot he had received in a fight with Hampton's cavalry. He did not dream he was talking to Wade Hampton him- self. *‘l am Wade Hampton,’’ said the senator. “‘If you have the leisure, please sit down and let us talk.’? Hampton had lost his leg after the war, when thrown from a mule while deer hunt-

ing. The amputation was identical with |

that of the congressman, and they fell a-talking. Up to that time neither had found « cork leg he could wear, and they discussed cork legs for a great while. They parted, after mutual pro- fessions of esteem. The next morning I heard the congressman tell the story in the committee room, and there never ‘was 4 man who had a higher regard for Wade Hampton than he had. There he was, calmly chatting with a friend. In the car she remarked to him that she had waited some time. It is she who tells the story. ‘‘And I had all the car with me,’’ she says in the course of her recital, ‘‘and he couldn’t say a word. Then when he got over to the Brooklyn side I took him up te the po- liceman who was standing there. ‘Ofii- cer,’ I said, ‘do you know when I came on to this bridge?’ ‘Why, yes,’ he said, ‘I noticed you because you waited so long. You came here just an hour ago.’ ' And te think that man was standing there as calmly as possible, without a thought that he had a wife anywhere in the world!’’—New York Times.
