' when a battery is charged, the gen,

erpitor from whose source it is sup- plied, literally fills the battery with electricity manufactured by the former. This is an erroneous ide-a. A generator does not put electricity into a battery. It does however, drive a current through the battery. The current that is delivered to the battery returns again to the generator, which is the culyway electricity will travel. that is froiu its source and return to its source. If the circuit is broken in any way, the current will not flow-

lt can be easily seen then, that the current travels from the posi- tive line of the generator to the positive terminal of the battery, through the battery and out again at the negative terminal to the neg- ative line and pole of the generat- or. What happens is this. The acid is driven from the elements and u chemical reaction is set up in the battery, which charge con- stitutes electricity itself. If the charge through the battery was niade in an opposite direction, namely, the positive line connect- ed to the negative terminal of the battery an tithe current returning via the positive terminal, on to the negative" line, the battery would discharge or the acid would be driven into the plates which would, constitute ~n discharged bat- tery.

Famous Shawl

LONDON, Sept. 12.-—~It has been discovered that the famous Cash- mere shawl. which has been on view in the IPatlals Court in the Indian Pavilion, at Wembley. has been damaged. Two days ago a hole about half’ an inch in diamet- er. was burned in the fabric.

fi‘he shawl, which took twelvo men three years to make, and which was brought to Wembley as an exhibit of the fine craftsman- ship of Cashmere, was to have been presented to the Queen. lt is grey in color, 7% yards long and 58 inches in width.

The offender who caused the da- mage, has not been discovered, but it is believed that the end of a cig- arette has been dropped on to the shawl. _-

The shawl will have to be sent back to Cashmere to be repaired by the workmen who made it. It is tho only shawl of its kind in the world and was mad-c of the down oi’ an Indian bird.

The shawl was insured fpr £500 but was valued much above that amount. The utmost care has been taken oi’ it since it has been In the Exhibition. It has been shown to visitors with every caution and has been handled gently.
