Many of the problems coiicerii- in: alcoholic beverages are hoary with age. but the young people of today have some of their very own. such as the prevalence of social .1;-inkiiig. beverage rooms. and the high pressure salesmanship of the liquor interests.

Will You Have One?

Most young people come up ..v,-nimt the pressure of social drinking. At parties you may hr. offered cocktails. served in spark-ll ling glasses. on elegant trays, and by people whom you trust and like. They may even say, "There's noth- ing in that to hurt. you. Learn to :irink in moderation. It is all right, is long as you know when to stop." I am not saying anything 88811151- iir-,-se people. Many of them mean well. but for once you and I know better than they do! Perhaps they never had an opportunity to learn if the effects of small quantities Tl alcohol on the higher centres of the brain. where judgment. self- :onl.r0l and conscience are centred. What Does Science Say?

There are many modern discov- mes that you take for granted-

iiyirig. radio and television - which were unknown to previous generations. One of the modern

developments is the scientific ap- proach to alcohol. Today we have scientific facts. and we know that even one cocktail or one bottle of beer contains enough of the nar- cotic brain-drug. alcohol. to make our conscience and our common sense less wide awake. It is true. the harm is not so visible as. drunkenness. but is none the les real. and can actually he mcasur-I ed by modern scientific '

Wit or Rubbish?

But. it is said "8. party is so dull ivithout any liquor to liven it tip." Why is it dull? And how is it liv- ened up? Tongues may be loosen- ed and the fun more hilarious, the drinkers may think that they are irelng very clever and witty. but it is surprising what nonsense will pass for wit when people have doped their higher brain centres. A student at the University. who used to drink at his College par- ties. became a member of the foot- ball team and. of course. had to quit taking alcohol because it? would spoil N-5 efficiency. He tells how childish the wit of the cock- tail-enlivened party appeared to his undrugged mind. And this is not an unique case. Twice in a week I have read two true stories. similar to this. one of a business woman and one of a man journal- ist, who both. having ceased to drink alcoholic beverages because they were interfering with their efficiency. said how surprised they were to find ”what rubbish passed for wit" among their drinking friends. or course. you want fun at your parties. Everyone does. but you want the right kind of fun: and, as Lady Astor said. "When I am having it good time. I do like to be enough in my senses to know what sort of good time I am hav- ing."

. Backbone or Spineless?

It may take courage in sayj ”NoI" when all youi- friends are' drinking but why we should feel that way about liquor is hard to understand. If you wish to take off a few pounds. you can refusal! to eat chocolate cake and ice r-ream and no one thinks it strange.

Have you ever tried identifying Warblers in autumn after a mixed flock has rillghled amidst the shrubbcry of your garden? It is like 3 game of hide and seek. with the birds doing the hiding. At first you see one - then you don't. For it second, another little head ap- pears around a leaf. and there is barely time to decide that it is either a Fine or Prairie Warb- ler. Something with Wvo white wing- i)Fll'S is glimpsed between the branches, but it might be I Blackburnian or a Black-throated Green. While shafts pass so close to your face that it is impossible to tell if they belong to a Chest- nut-sided Warbler, a Junco, or s Vesper Sparrow. Another small bird. probably a Warbler. keeps flitting from bush to bush, always evading you. and only giving the impression that it is mainly green.

That adds zest to- the chase. There are many greenish Warblers even in spring. and now some des- ceiidents of non-green parents a d to the number. some Vireos a d Ruby-crowned Kingiet also are greenish. and comparable in size to Warblers, causing more confusion. Size gives little iiid any-

way. Though Parula Warbler is sometimes but 4 1-2 inches long and 9. Connecticut might be as

much as 6. nearly all Warblers are from 5 to 5 l-2 inches. A Water- thrush or an Ovenblrd could be over 6 inches but their habits and choice of locality usually prevent mistaken identity.

It is essential that we keep in mind definite marks for each spec- ies: more than one if possible. White eye-rings, yellow under- parts. and olive backs are present in both Connecticut and Nash- ville Warblers. We must think of some distinguishing features. In spring the Connecticut wears a dark hood well down below its throat. Though much pale: now. this still shows

However. the very yellow check in the shape of a triangle is still quite noticeablef only a trace of the Canada warb- ler's pretty. black necklace is left for identification purposes. but its golden spectacles. nose piece and all. indicate its species.

The people of Hampton. Crap- and. Victoria, and surrounding dis- tricts were saddened when they learned that their old friend and neighbour. Mr. Thomas Cameron had passed away on Sept. 6th at the home of his daughter. Mrs. Eric Lowiher, Crapaud.

Although he had reached the ripe old age of 91 years and his death was not unexpected, those who knew him best felt a distinct sense of loss at his passing.

Mr. Cameron was. throughout most of his lifetime, a successful and energetic farmer. A man of sterling character and great in- tegrity. it may truly be said of him. "He was a fine Christian gen- tleman".

Always ready to lend a helping hand to any good cause. having for its object the betterment of the community in which he lived. his .asslng has left a void that will not easily be filled.

After retiring from farming he and Mrs. Cameron lived for a number of years in the village of Victoria. Shortly after the death of his wife. Louise Francis Cam- eron. which occurred on Oct. 9th.. 1949. he went to live with his

MAURICE JOHN HOOPER. Maurice John. eldest son of Mrs. George Hooper of Milton, and the lzilc Mr. George liooper, passed peacefully in his home beyond all earthly trials and suf- ferings on Thursday. She soon made a host. of friends in Tlgnish by her cheerful man- ner. her valuable assistance in community affairs. her kindness to young and old. and above all by her constant concern for the aged and innrm. She will always be remembered for her boundless de- votion and tirelus efforts in ad- ministering to the sick. as well as belng ever ready and willing to give her best to further the high- est ideal: of society. A full life such as hers could not be long. and Almighty God who will never be outdone in gen- erally. called her in the midst of her charitable activities. to come to I-lirn to enjoy His eternal re- ward. the chief purpose for which she was born. to see Him. to love Him. and to enjoy Him forever in Heaven.
