“It has always been man's cus- tom when he followed God‘: in- structions to build places of wor- ship there to meet for inspiration and instruction." Rev. M. Wetter- worth of Bangor, Mich., special speaker, said in the course of a dedication sermon at the Murray River Church of Christ yesterday aftanoon. How glorious it is in these troubled times when so many of the institutions of man are so utterly failing to find the people building churches for the further- ance of God's kingdom, he con- tinued. The apostle Paul said con- cerning the church of Christ, “a kingdom which cannot be moved," the speaker pointed out. "The Christian after all is the only hap- py individual in this world and the Church of God the only haPPY in- stitution," Mr. Watterworth de- clared. infidelity promises nothing, inspires nothing, does not benefit society and does not cheer lives but causes gloom and sorrow every- where. The prediction is sometimes heard that the Church is failing. That was not so for the way of the Church is successful and the way of real Christianity invincible, Rev. Mr. Watterworth declared in con- clusion.

The prayer of dedication was made by Rev. C. E. Armstrong, pastor at Murray Harbor Church. Special services held in the re- cently completed church in the morning, afternoon and evening were very largely attended both by members of other local congrega- tions and by members of Churches of Christ from other parts of the province.

Rev. Carlyle Watterworth, pastor of‘ the Church of Christ, Bummer- side, was the speaker at the morn- ing communion service. He took as the theme of his sermon, “What does it mean to be a Christian." It is a. question that must be answer- ed by every individual, by every church and by christenciom in gen- eral, hc said. “We are here in the world not to accumulate riches or win honor but to praise and glorify God and you, in a measure, have accomplished that in the construc- tion of this magnificent church building." the speaker told the members of the congregation. “Let us not think, however, that when we have erected a building in which to worship God that our work is finished. Our task is only beginning. Let us launch out and carry on according to the example set by our Master Jesus Christ," he finished. _

The communion service was conducted by Rev. C. E. Armstrong, pastor of the Murray Harbor Church.

At the morning service Mrs. Silas McKay, Murray Harbor, song very sweetly the always favorite hymn, “The Old Rugged Cross."

At the afternoon service Rev. Carlyle Watterworth prdsided. The Scripture lesson was read by Rev. '1‘. R. Goudge of the United Church.

At the evening service Rev. Car- lyle Watterworth presided and read the. scripture lesson after which Rev. E. Flanagan of the Baptist Church led in prayer. special music rendered included I solo by Mr. Rupert MacKay, Char- lottetown, who sang “When My Dreams Come True." and a quar- tetto which sang “Beautiful Gates of Home." Rev. M. Watterworth of Bangor, Michigan, a former pasta’ of Montague christian Church. preached the sermon, taking as his text Acts 2-23, preaching from the subject "The First Gospel Sermon."

The service was very largely at- tended, the church being crowded to the doors. the United Church and Baptist Church closing their service to assist in the dedication services.

Mr. Watterworth expressed ap- preciation on behalf oi the con- gregation to all those who assisted in the services. and also to mem- bers of the conlfllttion for their hospitality.

That the Christian religion is something more than “a glorified form of s::clI.l service" was empha- sized strongly in the course of his semen in st. James Church yes- terday ' by the pastor, Rev. R. Moorhead negate, DD. The text of Dr. 1.egau:'s sermon follows:

There was a woeful sound of sob- bing in the garden of Joseph of Arimathea. on the nut Christian Sunday morning. wecaubcfuirlysuretbctiihry of Magdala. had not slant much for two weary nights. And long before the dawn had come on Sunday, her agitated heart had drawn her tothe tomb where, she thought, lay the body of Him whom she had wor- shipped as her Lord and loved as her Master. No-one had a better right to her devotion than I-Ie_. 3y Him she had bee-nsaved from a life of shame that was worse than death. A few days before she had bathed His feet with her costly perfume and wiped them with the hairs of her head. And now she had come, as those who have loved and lost have a beautiful way of do- ing, to linger where He slept, and let grief have its way. And here I fresh blow falls. The grave is empty, the body gone. Breathless with amazement her grief breaks out snow. and as she kneels, half bund- ed by her anguished tears. in shadow falls upon the path beside her. Maybe this somebody will help. “O Gardener" she cries, someone has taken His body away. If you have done this, tell me where you have placed it and I will take it away. And then came one word, her own name. spoken by the clear and well- remembered voice that was sweeter to her car than any music. and the weeping that endured for the nights is turned to joy in the morning.

The Divine Factor

And, in the prayer that fol- lowed, this was one of his petitions —"Lord forbid that we should ever mistake Jesus Christ for the gar- dener." And that momsry gives me the theme for my sermon this morning. For there are countless people doing just what Mary did, taking Jesus Christ for less than

That. brethren, is the veryhingcon which hangs the door that opens into God's presence for you and me. that we “crown Him Lord of all." The Crone

For the thing that you must take into account more than anything else, in founln your decision about Jesus Christ, is His cross. The whole question of what your rolls-. iunmeansto you turns onthe meaning which you attach to the cross. Where are you to place the cross in your belief? How are you going to account for the cross? Are you going to say, as some say. that the cf-as was only the d€p10I'B.I7i£ end of a sweet and beautiful life? Are y.:u going to say, as many do. that the death of Jesus was only the death of a martyr. the giving of His life for the sake of a lofty ideal? Well, if you do that, this is what you are doing with Jesus Christr—you are simply putting Him on a. level with Ridley or Latimer, or with the noble Gordon brothers of our own Island, the martyrs of Erromanga, or with those of our soidiers who gave their lives inthe Great War for our altars and our hearts. Thzse sacrifices were more splendid than hearts can appreci- ate or words express: but if the death of Jesus means no more than that. where do you and I stand to- day? I will tell you where we sta.nd.—we have no gospel at all! And we cannot bluf! ourselves into believing that we have. It takes a redeeming cross to make a gospel. and it takes a dying sari of God to make a redeeming cross. That is the long and the ghort of the whole matter.

In other words, to realize to the full the blesings of religion, to understand exactly the why and wherefore of Jesus Christ. we have to make a journey to Calvary, and stand there till our hearts learn how to sing, “When I survey the won- drous Cross—on which the Prince of Glory died——My richest gain I count but loss—And pour contempt on all my pride."

There is nothing else for it but that, if you want to possess your- self of a faith that will lift you up above the things that are seen and temporal, to the things that are unseen and eternal.

Unworthy Substitutes

I know that this that I am say- ing is not the popular belief today. I know there are those that would sneer at me, and dub me old-fash- ioned and hopelessly out of date. But none cf these things move me when I look around and see the un- worthy substitutes that are so com- monly trying to take the place of the Cross; when I see so many people supposing Jesus Christ to be only the gardener, when I observe that what is being practised in such

He really is. What do I mean by that?

Let me put the matter to you in this way. Why are you interested in religion? Why do you come to church? Why have most of you be- come members in the fellowship of Jesus Chirst? Your answer to that question would be this—-because re- ligion can do something for me that nothing else can do. And what does it do for you? It gives me. you reply, strength of heart and peace of soul for the present dim- cult «laws. and for the unknown fu- ture, when these difficult days are past, it gives me a steadfast hope. And what do you mean when you speak of your religion that does these things for you? You simply mean your faith in Jesus Christ. F:r Jesus Christ is the embodi- ment of your religion: Jesus Christ is your religion. All that you get from your religion comes from your faith in Jesus Christ. The higher you set Jesus Christ in your heart and life the more you set of the blessing; of your religion; and the lower you set Jesus Christ in your heart and life, the less your religion does for you. so that the value of your religion depends entirely on the decisions you have come to ab:ut Jesus Christ.

Human side over-Emphuized And these decisions should be made with care, because a large body of Christian people today are allowing the Deity of Jesus Christ to fall into the background. with the result that the human side of our ‘Lord is more distinct in the faith of many thim His divine side. of course the human side of Jesus is of priceless value to us. But if you exalt His humanity at the coat of His divinity, you are simply rob- bing yourself of the best thin!!! that He can do for you. If Jaslll cm“; 13 gnly 3 man. as thousands of preachers are declaring Him to be, even the highest, holiest, most admirable man the world has eve!’ known. then you can only set "Om Him. as far as quality goes. the same sort of help that any of Y0“? kind neighbors or any or vaur dear- est friends would readily give you in s time of need.

All merely human help. no mat- ter how far it can go. is bound by certain limitations. Most of “-5 have found that out for ourselves.
