INCUBATION

The importance of replacing the farm flock is a factor that should receive consideration from all poul- try producers. Pouitrymen attend- ing to their flocks cell out approx- imately one-third each year. These birds are usually unprofitable hens. such as old ones. and low produc- iers. Then there is the loss through ;death. These losses should be re- placed each spring to keep flock up -to 100 hens, which lsan economical unit for any farm. Under average conditions hens lay best during their first ‘year of production. which production decreases gradually each succeeding year.

As a disease control measure the replacement of the flock is an im- pcttant item, because it is u. well known fact that tuberculosis and lather d‘ are more prevalent lin old birds. One can readily sec that it is important to cull tho Lilcck both from the standpoint oi" ,egg production, and disease. The Natural method requires tut: use of the hen, and involves the natural instinct of the hen during ‘brooding. The artificial method rc- quires the usc of the incubator. Each method has advantages, and disadvantages. During recent yeais the incubator has played an im- lportant part in the development of the poultry industry, because of the fact: that the outstanding advantage of the incubator over the broody hen is that the chicks can be hatched in larger units, thus putt-

ing the cost of hatching on a more economical basis. When incubators are used for hatching, there is less danger of chicks becoming infected with lice, parasites, and other such diseases, generally attributed to the old hen. Taking all factors into con- sideration, it is evident that under average conditions hatching chicks ‘in incubators is not only more sat- jlsfactory, but also more economical, ‘particularly where large numbers {are hatched. The incubator has a decided advantage in being able t0 hatch a few or several hundred chicks at a time, and these hatches "an be arranged in such a ivn‘! that a benefit is obtained from the standpoint of maturity of the pulicl; stock in limo for winter lay.
