Health preservation is having a good, healthy body and keeping it sv. President Bateman, of Knox College, used the first chapel service at the opening of the college session this fall in giving the students some wholesome counsel.

‘First of all,” says he, “‘take care of your health, You cannot study well without good health. Sleep as much as you need. You cannot have good heaith withcut seep. If you are up late at night you cannot keep your body aud miad in good condition for work.” This is as good advice for other people as it is for students. The young man who extends hie evenings of pleasure far into the night will be the listiess clerk at the counter, the care- less accountant in the cffice, and the slow work- man at the bench on the succeeding days.

Brandy in the Pudding.

A bridal party was visiting at our house, and one day after dinner the temperance question was introduced. After a free discussion I turned tothe brother of the bride (a young man I had not previously known) and said: **Of course you are a temperate young man!” I shall never for- get the look he gave me as he replied : ‘‘If you had asked ma that question yesterday mourning I woald have answered you em- phatically, Yea, Iam a temperate young man ; but to-day I cannot say it.”

I eagerly asked for an explanation, and, having my promise not to be offended, he frankly gave me the following statement:

‘* Harly in boyhood I discovered I had an appetite for strong drink. I secretly sought opportunities for its indulgence, and when seventeen years of age found myself in a fair way to become a confirmed in- ebriate. About that time | was converted, and through grace was enabled to keep a victory over the appetite, although the siruggle was a long and hard one. 1 signed the pledge, and for four years had faith- fully kept it, and had flattered myself that the appetite had been eradicated ; but, while visiting here, the brandy in your mince pies has been a source of growing temptation, and yesterday when I tasted the brandy sauce on your plum pucding it proved too much. You will remember I hastily excused myself, and in less than twenty minutes after leaving your house I was under the influence of liquor. You will also remem- ber that I did not return until some time in the evening, and by way of explanation, said I had a severe headache, and went immediately to my room. I was actually too intoxicated to trust myself in the parlor. -

This occurred about twenty-five years ago, and up to that time I do not remember ever to have heard a word offered against the use of brandy for culinary purposes, and being an earnest Christian woman would have resented the question, had | been asked if I was *“*a temperance woman /’

The answer that young msn gave me was a bitter revelation, and with a truly peni- tent heart I begged him to forgive my criminal thoughtlessness, and falling upon my knees] promised God never again to disgrace my table with the accursed poison; and then, amid our teara and sobs, the young man was persuaded to reconsecrate himself to God and to his pledge, and before we arose, God gave me the evidence that no farther fruit should follow the fear- ful mistake I had ao thoughtlessly made. From that time the young man was truly saved,

The state contributes half the expense of the parish in distributing relief provided the expenditure does not exceed $270,000 each year from ‘91 to '95, and $550,000 in subsequent years. There is no appeal from the decision of the parish authorities.

Mr. Anjrew Carnegie presented thetown of Ayr with $50,000 to establish a public library. On October 6 Mrs. Carnagie laid the corner-stone of the new iustitution, and later in the day Mr. Carnargie himself was presented with the freedom of the burgh.
