Jeatousy THe Cavse.—At Shatford, Ont., on Wednesday, Henry Newcomb, an old man seventy-five years of age, struck his young wife, aged twenty-five, over the head with an iron bar. She will probably die from the effects. Jealousy was the cause.

PostaL.—A new post office has been author- ized to be opened at Alberry Plains, to be served tri-weekly from Vernon River. Lower Freetown will be served with tri-weekly mails on and after Ist of November, next, superseding the present semi-weekly service.

For Boston.—The steamer Worcester, Capt. Nickerson, sailed for Boston last evening with the followin ngers: Mra Kelly, Miss Kelly, Mrs McNamara, Mrs Ashton, Jas Hemphill, Margt Cantello, Capt B Mc Dougall, Miss Carver, J Arsenault, Miss Collyer, Miss Grimes, Maggie McCulloch.

LoveH PassacE.—-The steamer Carroll, at Boston, from Charlottetown and Halifax, reports one of the hardest passages in her experience. The steamer was forced to put bak to sea again ‘after reaching Boston

light eatly Monday morning and await an abatement of the gale.

No Woxper.—At a recent meeting of the Toronto Board of Health, it was shown that during the month of mber 284 houses were found without drains, 424 houses with fov! privies, and $ houses with foul wells. There were 221 cases of typhoid fever reported during the month, the largest number in the history of the city.

A Day or Favatitres.—Wednesday last was a day of fatalities in Montreal. An un- known man was knocked over and killed on St. Paul street, and later on a Grand Trunk train ran into a horse and carriage at St. Henri, killing a little girl named Bowdoin, snd perhaps fatally wounding a man and boy. Still later, a littlé girl three years old, named Simpson, was run over and killed by an express wagon.

A Cuniosiry.—This morning we were thown a bridle of horse hair, woven by cowboy of the west while doing a term in prison. It is entirely made by hand and is woven as perfectly as if it were done by

mehinery. Dr. Duncan, of Glendive, Montana, who is the possessor of it, will lewe it at Dodd's Medical Hall, where

baptist pastor of Tremont Temple, Boston, ‘as resigned at the request of the trustees. The trustees objected to the doctor’s course in giving so much of his time to literary work, his “unclerical behaviour, possessing an‘ ‘riviag a span of horses noted for their speed,” . his leaning toward Unitarianism, and = “S entering into a ulation which nearly bankrupted him.

Preparing a Protest. New York, Oct. 23.

The Times says a protest against the operation of the McKinley tariff law is being prepared by counsel acting fora large number of the most prominent merchants of this city. The grounds on which the bill will be fought are : Ist, that by the passage of the McKinley Bill the old tariff of 1883 was not repealed; 2nd, that the alleged act entitled, ‘*‘An act to reduce the revenue and equalize the duties imperts and for other purposes"’ to have

At the Gladstone Club to-night, the boxing eontest between Geo. Dixon, the colored lad, and Bantam Wright, champion of the world, snd young Johnny Murphy, of Boston, for a $2,000 purse, and wager of $3,000 a side. In the 39th round Murphy’s backers tuiew up the sponge, their man being badly used up. Murphy weighed in 1144 pounds, and Dixon 113.
