I know several streams on the North River watershed that were tops as mink habitat a few years ago but Indians and their dogs who camped in the area for sever- at years cleaned the area bare. This last few years a party of Indians have established head- quarters in the Vernon-unwell district and trappera are com- plaining about their depredatlons. This sector was formerly a Q en- did mink area but in a year a so will be in the same condition as the North River .dls.trlct.

I have found many signs of their work on my travels. The most recent was during this past week. on Wednesday I took a look- sce over my old stamping ground ...the beaver dam country of Mount Albion and Lake Verde. 1 still own a section of swamp and woodland through which the head- waters of Bherry's Creek flow; on its way to the Hillaboro River or East River to many local residents.

I trapped this stream when a boy and know od an old establish- ed mlnk den that had been a go- ing concern long before my time. when I reached it on Wednesday my first impression was that s Regiment of North Koreans had started to dig in although it is a long way from the 30th Paraleli. This den was quite extensive in its scope and covered an area ap- proximately 20 feet square. What a mess they made. Trees were chopped down and holes dug all over the place. At the end they sat on a windfall and ate their lunch lcavlmz paper and cardboard cartons scattered all over. That den is no longer a going concern

He didn't know who they were but one was tall. one medium and one lnsll and short. They carried no guns but one had an axe and another had what looked like a pack or something. He also des- cribed the dog that was with them. He also said that he thought the third carried some sort of tool but Wasn't certain. Bi-other did he ever put the finger on that party of Bucks. He couldn't have done it any better if he had given me their names and addresses. I've run across them all in my travels.

Incidentally its an offence un- der The Cvame Act to cut into a muskrst house whether traps are act therein or not. Cutting into muskrat houses after the ice has formed is an offence that should be punishable with a jail term... one or two muskrats nre caught and the rest die from exposure.
