Councilors Elected, U-Pass Fails

Voter apathy was the order of the day for the fall by-election, held on Wednesday and Thursday of last week. Just over 15% of eligible students turned out to cast their vote in the referendum on the proposed U-Pass and for a variety of Student Union Councilor’s positions.

The hotly debated U-Pass was defeated by a slim 5% margin. Of the 465 votes cast, 244 opposed the plan as proposed. UPEI SU Executive VP, Shaun Coady, had declared prior to the vote that apathy would spell doom for the question. He surmised that students who were against the plan would certainly get out and vote, but the same could not necessarily be said for those in favor of it.

In addition to the referendum, voting was held for Education Rep, First Year Rep and Science Rep. Complete results are posted below.

The 26" Deans’ Academic Honours and Awards Nights were held at the W.A. Murphy Student Centre on October 3 for Arts, Education and Business Administration and October 4" for Science and Nursing. The events, which were sponsored by Purity Milk and Paul’s Flowers, were opened with a speech by this year’s host dean, Dean of Science Dr. Roger Gordon, followed by an address from President H. Wade MacLauchlan. Students were then presented certificates for their previous year’s academic performance after which some students were also presented with university or donor awards for their academic performance and intellectual pursuits. Congratulations to all the dean’s list students and award-winners, and many thanks to the event organizers, sponsors, and donors for their contribution.

Women’s Centre Extends Hours The Women’s Centre is extending its hours, and as of Monday, October 3, 2005 will be open from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

Evening Hours at Student Services Beginning Tuesday,October 4, 2005, Student Services will provide the following services: Tuesdays, 4-6pm - Career/Academic Counselling Wednesdays, 4-8pm - Academic/Personal Counselling For appointments please call: 566-0488. The Adaptive Technology Centre will also be open both evenings during the hours indicated above.

Change of Location for the Campus ATM The ATM in the Robertson Library has been removed. Anew ATM has been installed in the W.A. Murphy Student Centre.

2004-2005 Yearbooks Now Available in Student Union Office The 2005 UPEI yearbooks are now available. Graduates of the 2004-2005 year are entitled to a free copy of the yearbook. If you are not a grad, now is the time to purchase this. wonderful time capsule for only $10. Copies may be picked up at the Student Union Office, Room 219, located in the W. A. Murphy Student Centre. Office hours are Mon.-Fri. from 9:00am to 4:00pm. Ask for information at front desk if there are no yearbook staff in Room 219.

New Scholarships at UPEI

A Toronto family with connections to Prince Edward Island has made a substantial commitment to assist undergraduate students in the Faculty of Arts at UPEI. Beginning this fall, students entering their second year of the four-year BA program have access to two new $15,000 scholarships established by Nona Macdonald Heaslip and Bill Heaslip. The first Heaslip Scholars have just been chosen. They are Meghan Ferris and James MacCormac.

In 2006, the Heaslips will support three-year renewable scholarships to two additional students. Beginning in 2007, two new Heaslip scholars will be selected every year and this arrangement will continue in perpetuity.

“The tremendous generosity of Nona Macdonald Heaslip and Bill Heaslip will mean that a total of six students will be receiving $15,000 each over three years for their studies,” says UPEI President Wade MacLauchlan. “This is an unprecedented arrangement for scholarships at UPEI and a wonderful expression of support for our great university.” President MacLauchlan added that many students rely on scholarships, bursaries and awards to fund the cost of post- secondary education. These scholarships often make the difference between continuing at university or not.

William Heaslip was the co- founder of Grafton Group Ltd., and he built what became one of the largest men’s clothing companies in Canada. He is a Member of the Order of Canada. Nona Macdonald Heaslip is an established public relations consultant and journalist. She and her husband have made numerous donations to support education, the arts, and health care organizations in
