Locomotive To Become I Attraction

VICTORIA (Cpl—Some peo ple have fairies at the bottom of their garden. Len Hutton has a locomotive.

Mr. Hutton. who has spent 35‘ years driving every kind of steam engine—from farm trac- tor to locomotive—bought the. ill-ton steam locomotive for old time's sake. He plans to turn it into a tourist attraction. ‘

The 8-year-old behemoth was shipped here by sea from West; Germany. ‘

"Once I get her cleaned upl and ready to go, she could he} a popular attraction in one of: our parks 1 " e was built tor use In sur- face mining but the mine closed in 1943 and the engine was re- tired after only seven years of use so she should be in good

shape.

Mr. Hutton doesn‘t say how. much the locomotive cost mm; but he admits to spending $1,150} in customs duties to bring it1 into Canada.

The engine runs on a two-footy gauge track. ‘

Mr. Hutton said he had his mind set on an engine in the United States but found it would have cost more to have one shipped by land than it cost to ship the German one by see.

Mr. Hutton gained his first experience with steam engines aboard a threshing machine on his parents' farm near Prince Albert. Sask.. in the early 1920:.

He has driven many steam engines since then and found the trickiest job was manoeuvr- ing big: locomotives at Ogden Point docks here.

"One miscalculation. and the whole engine could have gone Into the drink."

MORELL - The Moi-ell ‘ Branch of the Canadian Legion celebrated the opening of ital newly renovated home recently i by presenting awards to some! of its members and by a social ‘ evening at which the branch treated over 60 members andj visitors to a lobster boil.

For his unselfish work in the 3 service of the Legion. a life‘ membership was presented to, Edzar MacKinnon by the provin- cial president. Mercer Muilin. This brought the mem-‘ bership in the branch to 90. This is about 90 percent of the poten- tial in the area served by the . branch. it. was stated.

Present from provincial eom- ‘ mand for the re-opening of the I branch besides Mr. Mullin andi Mr. Smith were Edwin Hogan, , provincial secretary. Capt. A.C. MacEachern. honorary treasur-i er. and Harvey Poole. eastern 3 Kings zone commander.

The branch spent $5000 to re- model and furnish their home with the main section on the ground floor and the lounge «1 the second floor. The third floor. Which Is unused at pre- sent. was offered to the scouts and guides.
