The pular name for the col- ony—" irgins’ Garden"—grew out of a rule strictly enforced for a thousand years that no woman- and not even female animals- was permitted to set foot on the mountain. In recent years, how- ever, the rule has been relaxed to allow female cats and hens.

The monasteries, some of them huge castle-like buildings cover- lng several acres and housing hun- dreds, are dotted over the rocky mountain, connected only by mule, trails, or by boat. Some of the! monks live a hermit. existence in. mean huts. eking out a living by making trinkets.
