What if the Board disagreed with the candidate se- lected by the Presidential Search committee? Would you also reject that recommendation and provide no information to the university community about your reasons for doing so?

We recognize that it is within the legal power of the Board to reject the recommendations of such committees, although our understanding is that this power has not previously been exercised. And while we may disagree with the wisdom of exercising that power, we feel that it is imperative that the Board have a higher standard of accountability to the univer- sity community when carrying out such actions.

We call upon the Board to make a public statement to the entire University community, clearly stating its reasons for rejecting the recommended candidate, Barb Mullaly, for Athletic Director, and indicating why she was not considered to be suffi- ciently qualified for the position. Furthermore, we

surprisingly low, be wary of high milage or defects with the car. It may have been in an accident, so don’t be afraid to ask about the history of the car.

A word about milage-- typical milage is fif- teen thousand kilometers a year. Take the milage, and divide by the number of years ago the car was made. If you get more than twenty thousand, that’s high milage. Ifthe total milage is less than eighty thousand klicks, though, don’t worry about it, unless the car is only one year old. Above two hundred thousand, the life of the engine becomes a factor, especially in domestic cars with small powerplants. High revving four cylinder engines only last so long. Quality has improved in recent years, but still be wary of high milage on these engines. Exceptions are Honda, Toyota, BMW, and Mercedes, and a few other com- panies, which are known to make durable engines.

If a car is priced well, and has acceptable milage, a test drive is the next order ofbusiness. Take the car out for as long as the seller will allow you. Most will let you go by yourself, which ismuch better

than having a dealer sitting beside you. On the test drive, drive on different roads, and see how well the car handles at various speeds. It’s a good idea to take the car out on the highway, if only for afew minutes. Watch for firmness in the steering, listen for rattles and squeaks. If there are little things that annoy you on the test drive, imagine how much they’ll bug you later. Check for comfort as well. A small car is not a good buy if you’re cramped and crowded while driving it. You should check the back seat as well. If you don’t fit back there, think about your future passengers. If they’re the same size as you are, they won’t like the rear either.

Rather than driving the car for the whole time, take it to a reputable mechanic. If you don’t know any mechanics, ask around and get a recom- mendation. Often the underside of the car reveals more than the visible portions, so make sure to have it raised on a hoist. A thorough inspection

As a student of UPEI, I have no problems with the delay for an athletic director. Actually, the delay proves that there is a lot of well-deserved concern for the athletic department, What is this uncon- firmed crap about Barb Mullaly supposedly awarded the job? Unconfirmed means not necessarily true. Scott MacDonald seems to biasly favour Barb Mullaly, but he has every right to do so. In closing his article, he stated that UPEI has alienated someone who works hard for them (Mullaly). Is he implying that a new athletic director wouldn’t work hard for UPEI? Ihope that an excellent choice for an athletic director is made. -- A True Panther Fan

may not be necessary, but it never hurts. Some mechanics may charge to examine a car, enquire if you don’t know their policy. Keep in mind that paying a small fee is better than spending thousands of dollars on a bad car.

If the car is mechanically sound, meets your needs, drives well, and the price is right, it’s time to buy. But DON’T PAY THE ASKING PRICE. Nine out of ten sellers price their car well above what the car is worth. Do not hesitate to negotiate. If you drive a hard bargain you can save hundreds, maybe thousands of dollars. This is your money, so press until the dealer will not reduce the price any farther. If you are too timid to wheel-and-deal, get a trusted friend to haggle on your behalf.

That’s all I can really tell you about buying a used car without answering specific questions. I hope that the suggestions in this column will be helpful the next time you’ re in the market for a used car.
