An innovative project of painting fish beside storm drains in St. John's, Newfoundland was kicked off by Mayor Shannie Duff and 700 Girl Guides. The girls also went door to door handing out brochures that reminded people that what they put down a storm drain ended up in fish habitats and suggested better alternatives. The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources established a Policy Advisory Committee to develop recommendations for a strategy for the conservation of old growth forest ecosystems. The 10 member Policy Advisory Committee will be assisted by a 10 member-Scientific Advisory Committee and a 3 member secretariat. These groups are tasked with presenting a draft strategy to the Minister for old growth red and white pine forests by the end of 1992 and for other forest types by the end of 1993. STRANGE VISITOR TO HUMMINGBIRD FEEDER by John Burka

We have had some interesting sightings at our feeder in Elliot park. We have been using black oil sunflower seeds for the first time this year. For the first time in seven years, we have had regular summer visitation of two pairs of Rose-breasted Grosbeaks and two pairs of Purple Finches. We presume both are nesting in nearby trees. We also had two pairs of Downy Woodpeckers and an occasional Hairy Woodpecker. We took down the suet in May but the woodpeckers kept coming to the sunflower seeds. On July 14th, a female Downy Woodpecker was feeding a young one sunflower seeds. Another interesting sight has been a Downy Woodpecker bending over backwards to drink nectar from a hummingbird feeder.
