Dear Sports Wizard,

your column should not be in the sports section of the X-Press, itshould be in the funnies. If you had any idea about hockey, you would not write the garbage that is in the X-Press every week. Of course, I see your point, the LEAFS ARE THE BEST TEAM -not!! You must have guts to write this kind of stuff, because someone could very well come after you. Maybe instead of writing a sports column, you could start up a ‘‘DEAR CHRIS’’ column because you definitely don’t know anything about hockey.

Inreading the November 12 edition, I thought I was reading the sports section but then it said Rob Pearson could take Rick Tocchet in a fight. Then I knew I must have flipped over the funnies. :

Let’s have a little reality here. Rob Pearson once got ina fight with his grandmother and she split him for twelve stitches. He was quite a mess.

Although this letter is quite derogatory, I still think it should be changed to the comics section, of the paper. In closing, I would like to say thatI find your column quite hilarious. Thanks for the ENTERTAINMENT.

Hosting a recent international conference onisland self-reliance is only one of many notable accomplishments of the Institute. In 1987,these Island ‘Studies people commissioned George McRobie, author of Small is Possible,to tour the Island in order to observe that environmental education in the formal educationsector was ‘‘in obvious need’ ’ Although, McRobie witnessed a strong infrastructure with the potential for sustainability henoted that the education and training designed to motivate and equip people for self-reliance+_(0*0*0*__+ihas been neglected for several generations and is now in need of high priority .These qualities, according to McRobie, are gained through student directed problem solvingwhere students learn economics and sociology by doing projects in a community.

Thestudents’ role is to unfold environmental options for com-

munity development. Businessorganizations and workers study new forms of relationships and on farm research ofsustainable technologies assists regional agriculture. A sustainable educa-

tion programenhances local economic development through

apprenticeship programs. Energy resources(in our case wind,

solar and water) are studied for their potential. In some

instances money for local enterprises can be raised through the

development of ethical investment funds.Concerns for the eco-

logical and social relevance of modern education is the most

seriousevaluation today’s students should be concerned with.

The incorporation of these aspectsof education into the formal program is a claim most universities are ill prepared to make. The Institute for Island Studies is an inspiring beginning to this process. How far its idealshave been able to permeate the university curriculum is the real standard by which toevaluate the institution. Phil Ferraro
