Tur city batteries of Artillery, the En- gineers, and three companies of Infantry, were Inspected and reviewed by General Middleton and Sir John Ross yesterday.

The companies met at the Drill Shed at ® 30 o'clock. After some practice in the movements they were to go through, they marched to the Park headed by the Artil- lery Brigade Band. Arvived at the Park, aftor marching past once, they formed in line and awaited the coming of the General. On his arrival he was received with a general salute at open order, the band playing the regulation tune for that man- ceuvre. The line was then brought to the shoulder and was inspected by the General, accompanied by his staff. The General then took up his position at the saluting point, and the parade was marched past, first in quick and then in double time, doing both admirably. They were then given the command,\by Col. Dogherty, to form quarter column on number one. This was done very creditably. No. 1 Company remaining in position, the other companies wheeling in succession first to the right, then to the left coming up at quarter column dstance in rear of No. 1. The next movement was in fours at quar- ter column distance through tu the open ground near the shore where they received ammunition and were formed for the attack, the Engineers acting as a re- serve corps. They were they marched to the front where they commenced firing by successive companies, one company rushing while the others were firing, and soon. A brisk fire was kept up until they had ad- vanced, by this effective mode of firing, to the centre of the field, when the call was given to cease firing and fix bayonets. All being in readiness the bugler sounded the charge when the whole line rushed rapidly but evenly to frent, with a rousing cheer, and only halted when some of the men had got caught in the bushes. They next marched back to their original and again saluted the General and were given the order to “‘order arms ; stand at ease.”

Considerable routine business was trans- acted, the report of the Grand Master being a very elaborate and able one, showing that the growth of the Order in this jurisdiction is at present very flourishing.

The Grand Lodge adjourned at 1 o’clock p- m., to assemble this morning at 10 o’c!ock.

At 9.30 this morning the representatives were photographed from the steps on the south side of the Law Courts Building by Brotaer Thomas Cook.

The exemplification of the degree work last evening before the Grand Lodge by the Union Degree Staff of St. Lawrence and Wildey Lodges,was performed in an able manner, and received high enconiums from the representatives, Past Grand Master Cushing remarking that, having witnessed | the work performed by the first lodges in |the United States, he could truthfully say | that the exemplification by our local teams

excelled anything he had ever seen.

A BUDGET OF GENERAL NEWS FROM ALL PARTS OF THE WORLD,

Ronpout, N. Y., Aug. 9.—A]woman saw a young man about 25 years old hanging by a rope from a limb of a tree this morning, on the road leading from Rondout to Steep Itocks. His arms and legs were twitching, and frightened at the sight the woman ran and calied some men employed at a brick- yard near by. When they arrived the man was still alive, but they wouldn't cut the rope supposing they had no right to do so, and that the coroner should be summoned, The suicide is unknown here. Early this morning he visited a grocery store and paid forty ceuts for the clothes line with which be took his life. The name Fromer was found on his shirt.

Lonpon, Aug. 13.—A bill has been intro- duced in Parliament by Healy providing for an appeal in all criminal cases in Ireland. lt passed its first reading to-day.

Panis, Aug. 13.—The Senate Court has found Boulanger guilty of conspirrey. Six Senators did not vote. The court found Dillon and Rotehefort guilty of complicity in the plot. It was decided, 198 to 10, that Boulanger was guilty of a treasonable at- tempt against the State in connection with the Lyons depot incident.

Frepericron, Aug. 13 —Recent rains and damp weather have seriously affected potatoes along the river. Early potatoes have escaped to a large extent, and are a profitable Crop, but the late yield on the highlands has been severely smitten by rust. Reports from the Nerepis valley are far from encouraging, anda gentleman now here states that on Keswick ridge the late vines are all blasted. Early Rose area good crop.

Frepericron, Aug. 13.—The Supreme Court this morning gave judgment in the Ellis contempt case, convicting Mr. Ellis of the contempt, and respiting the seutence until the first Tuesday m February, for which time they took fresh bail from Mr, Ellis to appear and submit to sentence, i case the appeal to the Supreme Court at Ottawa, which Mr. Ellis gave notice of his intention to take, should confirm the judg- ment of this court. The judgment was unanimous, Justices Wetinere and Fraser taking no part.
