Of these coarser forms of adulterations it will be unnecessary to say even a word. They are universal- ly recognized as unfit te be used, and every honest dealer is of the opinion that the sooner they are driven out of the market the better it will be for trade.—Sanitarian.

Of Princess Pauline Borghese, she whose charms Canova is supposed to have immortalized in his Venus Vic- trix, Mr. Augustus J. ©. Hare, in his “The Story of My Life,” relates this anecdote, told him by Lady Ruthven:
She used, when at Rome, to go te “la toilette des pieds’’ of Pauline Borghese. Regular invitations were is- sued for it. When the guests arrived, they found the princess, supremely | lovely, with her beautiful little white feet exposed upon a velvet cushion. Then two or three maids came in and touched the feet with a sponge and fusted them with a little powder— “c’etait la toilette des pieds.’? The Duke of Hamilton used to take up-one of the little feet and put it inside his Waistcoat “‘like a little bird.”’

Sexs or Tempekance.—The District Division No. 4, of the Sons. of
Temperance met with Victoria Division in Wright's Hall yesterday afternoon. The meeting although not largely attended was interesting aud profitable. In the even- ing a public temperance ertertainment was held at which a very suitable pro- gramme was carried out. Mr. C. B. Werren occupied the chair, and Miss Millie Chappell presided at the organ.
Typxoip Fever Prevaits.—Typhoid fever prevails in the West End, and al- though none of the cases have become fatal as yet the aspect at present looks very serious. It is reported that on Saturday there were no !essthat 53 cases of this dread disease throughout the West End. One house bas four of the family very low witk the fever, while the other dwellings have from one to three cases ard physicians are being kept busy at- tending the s.ck.— St. John Telegraph.
Dr. Carwayn’s Visir.—Rev. Dr. Car- man, geueral superintendent of the Meth- odist Church in Canada, arrived by boat last eve:d g from Pictou, and will remain forafew days on the Island. He has kindly consented to visit and address the congregations in Cornwall, York aad Pow. nal on the schemes of ihe church. The plan of his visitation is as follows: Corn- wall, Wednesday; York, Thursday, and Pownai on Friday. These churches are to be congratulated on the priyilege of hearing Dr. Carman, and we are sure our friends will fill the churches on the occa- sion of bis visit. Dr, Carman is the guest of Richard Heartz, Esq.
