TORONTO (CPI—Radioactive water from uranium mills at Elliot Lake have contaminated waterways in the surroundinc area to a point where control : measures are essential to pre-‘ vent future hazards. the On- tario water resources commis- sion reported here.

In some lakes in the dlsll‘lcl. “radium concentrations are approaching levels that may be- come serious enough to pre elude future use of these lakes for certain purposes it the spread of contamination contin» ues." the report says.

Dissolved radium was found as far as the mouth of the Ser- pent River in a commission survey last summer. The Ser- pent River winds through a series of lakes in the area to emerge 20 miles south of Elliot Lake on the north channel of Lake Huron.

The report says there is "no immediate radioactive hazard" to persons in the Elliot Lake region and adds that anu- pollution control measures are under way.

Unemployment Jump Reported

OTTAWA (CPl — A seasonal dip in farm jobs. coupled with layoffs in the auto industry. combined to cause an above- normal increase in unemploy- ment between mid - September and mid-October.

The number of jobless shot up 40,000 to 258000. representing 3.7 per cent of the national la- bor force. This rate was 3.1 in September. lowest. in eight years. In October of last year it stood at. 3.9.

Unemployment rates by re- gions. with last month's rates in brackets. were: Atlantic 5.6 per cent (5.4L Quebec 5.1 (4.3). Ontario 2.9 (2.2). Prairies 1.9 (1.6) and British Columbia 4.3 (3.9).
