Disaster at Sea.

| San Francisco, Aug. 21.

| The Merchant's Exchange of this city | bas just received the following particulars | of the loss of the British ship Haddington- | shire. The vessel left Astoria on J uly 6th, She got down as far as the equator, when she was struck by a heavy gale which so disabled her as to oblige the captain to put back to San Francisco for repairs, In the gale he lost four seamen and the chronom- eters. When off this port last night they encountered a heavy fog, and’ while groping around ran on the rocks near Point Reys. The vessel and cargo are totally wrecked, and all on board except one sailor and a cabin boy drowned.

The double scull race between Courtney and Conley against Gaudier and Hosmer, took place here to-day. It was easily won by the former pair. Time, seventeen minutes and four seconds.

Gaudier, however, entered a protest, |claiming that Courtney and Conley were jassisted around the stake boats by the | occupants of the latter. The referee would ) not entertain the protest.

Hanlan and Lea have challenged Courtney an’ Conley to a double scull race for three miles on the same course for

$1,000 a side.

The Short Line claims investigation closed here yesterday. Judge Clarke hav- ing settled some three hundred claims, His Honor goes to Pictou to-day to attend to claims at that place. When the Pictou claims are settled the investigation will be adjourned until September.

The Standard urges upon the Govern- ment the great importaneo of an alliance between England and Turkey.

The Standard’s Berlin correspondent says that an eminent Turkish diplomatist de- clares that the Sultan and Grand Vizier oppose an alliance of Turkey with England.

Fatal Fire. Montreal, Aug. 21. During a fire in the Beli Telephone wotks in this city, $80,000 worth of pro- perty was destroyed. The watchman, who was asleep in the building when the tire broke out, was burned to death.

Liquor License Appeal.

Mr. Burbridge, Deputy Minister of Justice, leaves for England in October,to be in attendance at the appeal re Liquor License Act, then to be heard by the Privy Council.

Lord Carnarvon's Visit.

Dupin, Aug. 21. Lord and Lady Carnarvon arrived at Westfort to-day, and were reccived with enthusiasm. Lord Carnarvon received several addresses.

Cairo, Aug. 21. The news that the rebels have taken and occupied Debbeh and Ambuquise, and are now marching on Dongola, is to-day con- firmed.

Winpsor, Ang. 21, C. W. Payazant, Accountant of the Com- mercial Bank, died suddenly of heart dis- ease yesterday. He was widely known.

Cholera in London Lonvon, Aug. 20. A girl, seven years of age, died at Wid- nes, on the Mersey, to day of English cholera of the worst type.

At his residence, Mount Stewart, on the 13th ult., after an illness of one week, which he bore with Christian resignation to the Divine Will, Thomas Douglass, aged 67 years. The deceased leaves a wife and one child, together with a large circle of friends, to mourn their loss.

The Water Works Question.

Sik,—Your article on the Water Works in yesterday’s issue, wherein Mr. Gamblie’s opinions on the questicn are pretty fully explained, affords much valuable and inter- esting information to our citizens. It

know that an abundant supply of pure water can be bad within a distance to war- rant the cost of its intrcduction into the city. That question once settled, would be so far very well. But yet another grave question stares us in the face and requires the most serious consideration, and that is : whether a complete system of sewerage, in connection with such Water Works, would be an absolute necessity. Why has not Mr. Gambie’s opinions on that important matter been elicited by our Council Board ? It would be well also to ascertain if he is a competent authority to decide on such a vital question to our citizens. It is cur- rentiy reported that Mr. Gamble has already admitted, in presence of some Councill rs, that a system of Water Works fer Charlottetown would necessitate a sys- tem of sewerage But whether he did make the admission or not matters little, the facts will remain the same—that sewer age will, if we have a water supply, become an absolute necessity. Lot us hear from these who think otherwise through your columns. CITIZEN. August 20th, 1885.
