Quebec and Peterboro’ had a brisk fight for the honor of enterta‘ning the Canadian Wheelmen’s Association on the Ist of July, and Quebec won. It now appears that a similar spirited fight between Win- nipeg and Victoria for the same honor is among the possibilities of 1898. Vic toria has hada road race of her own, one of fifteen miles, which drew a large crowd of people and created a great deal of in- terest.

Tus Bears Nova Seoria.—A Spring field, Mass., despatch says: Lying at the poiat of death in her home near Chicopee falls is Mrs. Margaret Bowen, wife of Bart bolomew Bowen, at the extreme age of 121 ears. She was born in the parish of Kon zane, County Clare, Ireland, in 1775, and came to this country in 1865. She has Since lived with her husband, whe is 76 years old, in Chicopee Falls.

used with the aid of large charts on which the many different kinds of estates were Classified and arranged in order. This “genealogical tree” of the history ofthe laws relating to real property was simply in- valuable to the students and aided as | much in the study of this subject as maps do im the study of the physical features of | a country. The lectures on sales were conducted jon the principle of the Harvard system of case reading. The students were pro- vided with copies of “Williston on Sales,” ; Which contained all the principal English and American cases reported arranged and classified under the usua! divisions of | the law on the subject. | The lectures ou Sales were, perhaps, | the most interesting, and were greatly ap- preciated by the students. While tracing from a collection of judicial decisions the igradual development or modification of {the leading principles on which the law of , Sales is founded until those principles be-

; came firmly settled and established by be- jing imbedded in the judgment of the

were being instructed in one of the high- est branches of the profession—the art of sifting fram a mass of contradictory deci-

The law students would indeed be un- worthy of their high calling if they did not f el in the highest degree grateful to Dr. Hodgson for the great work he has undertaken in fitting them for their pro- fession. The well-known abilities of Br. Hodgson asa teacher united with his

qualify him to deliver a course of lectures on legal subjects and the law students of this city must be congratulated on haying such a rare opportunity of acquiring a comprehensive knowledge of the law. At a special meeting of the Law Students Association of Charlottetown held on Fri- day evening the following resolution was passed unanimously :—

“Whereas, The course ef lecturea which we have had the privilege of attending during the past winter is now completed avd it becomes us to place on our minutes a fitting expression of our appreciation of the lectures, and our gratitude to Dr. Hodyson for his self-denying efforts in preparing us for our profession.

Be it therefore resolved, That we place on record our deep feeling of indebtedness to the learned Docter tor his unsparing efforts for our welfare, and for the inter- esting and instructive course cf lectures delivered by him during the past winter, and that the Secretary forward a copy of this resolution to His Lordship conveying with it the resolve of the individual mem- bers of the Association that the events of the future will not cause him to regret the course he has taken nor the labor expend- ed on their behalf.”

The lectures will be resymed at the close of the midsummer vacation.

It is said that several directors of the British South Africa Chartered Cc mpany will resign unless the resignation of Cecil Rhodes is accepted.

Sir Isaac Pitman, in an interview, men- tioned the curious fact that in the early days of his shorthand crusade the system «as assailed on religious grounds—one cleric declaring in print that “Mesmer- ism, phonography, Chartism and social ism are the stalking horses behind which the most satanic lies and the most absurd blasphemies are sent forth.”

The bottom of the coffin containing the rema.ns of Holmes, who was executed at Philadelpia on Thursday last was filled with cement and the body completely cor ered with cement. It was Holmes idea that this cement would barden around the body and prevent grave robbery. Lawycr Rotyn says Holmes made no will and left no confession. Someone offered Mr. Rotan $5,000 for the body, but the offer was re- fused. Holmes bai accomplices in his crimin«] operations and murders.
