Preparations are now going on a pace for the rush of spring work and many farmers are try- ing to beat the pole horse by get- ting manure and fertilizer spread on their eod fields.

Levelling of farm drive-ways and side roads is in evidence. the auto- mobile has certainly resulted in the farmer taking more interest in the approach to his home.

Central Farmers Institute I

while the number of active farmers Institutes in the prov- ince has steadily declined for some years. a number of the remaining ones are still doing a real good Job and their interest resulted in a decision at the annual meeting to continue the Central Organi- zation and develop the annual meeting as one in which discuss- ions on problems of production and farm management would be highlighted. The annual meetings of most farm organizations are of necessity devoted almost entirely to business. For this reason. we feel the annual meeting of the Central Farmers Institute can render a valuable service in providing dis- cussion and information on practical farm problems.

Tariff Changes

While the recent budget provid- ed little in the wiry of good news for most. people, it did make some concessions of value to agricult- ure by lowering the tariff on cert- ain articles of farm equipment. Added to the tariff free list are grain or huy dryers; milk coolers; steel stanchions; automatic stock- watering bowls; barn litter car- riers and track: sprinkler. irriga- tion systems: barn hey forks. pui- leys and my truck.

At the annual meeting of the Dairy Farmers of Canada there was unanimous agreement that the floor price on butter iihould be raised to 62 cents per pound. Rumor indicates that the govern- ment may be considering a 58 cents floor which in the light of rising production costs would, we feel be quite inadequate from the standpoint of stimulating declining production and providing the con- sumer with an ample supply.

Backed by the C. F. A. and pro- vincial Federations, Dairy inter- ests have been making vigorous representations to Ottawa to establish the s2 cent level.

If dairying is going to hold its own with beef raising, certainly more encouragement must be pro- vided than was the case one year ago.
