Roberts, Baron of Kandahar and Waterford, K. P., G. C. B., G. C. S. 1, GCaALE,V.C, D.C L, UL D.as he is officially known, was born at Cawnpore, India, in 1832, of Irish parentage. His father, General Sir. Abraham Roberts, G. C. B., was a soldier before him. Lord Roberts be- gan his career in the British Army forty-eight years ago as a 2nd lieut- enant in the Bengal Artillery ; promo- tion came gradually, but unceasingly, until he reached the rank of major- general in 1878. In 1883 he became lieutenant-general, in 1890 general, in 1895 field marshal and commander of Her Majesty’s forces inflreland.

He served throughout the siege and capture of Delhi, and was wounded in that campaign, and also took part in a half score of other engagements dur- ing the Indian mutiny. He was present throughout the operations connected with the relief of Lucknow, and was at the battle of Cawnpore. In 1867-68 he took part in the Abyssinian expedi- tion, and three years later commanded the Kuram field force in North-west- ern India. In 1879 he commanded the Kabul field force in the Afghan istan expedition, and captured the clty of Kabul. He was specially detailed to proceed to the relief of Kandahar and the Southern Afghanistan field force in 1880, and was victorious. He commanded the army of Burmah in 1886 anc from 1885 to 1893 was com mander in chief for all india.

Pierce, a protest with Secretary of State Hay. Other orders of Britain for ammunition are being filled by the Bridgeport Com- pany, and Dr. Muller made the protest with the hope of preventing the ship- ment of these. Consul Genera! Pierce has received a reply from Hay. He refuses to interfere, stating that in case of war belligerents have the right to purchase any kind of goods {in neutral countries subject to confiscation after shipment, As the Boers have no sea- port, the advantage lies entirely with England. When Mr. Pierce was seen | at the Consulate, he said tnat no com ment should be made to Secretary | Hay’s letter, as it answered all pro- tests completely.
